The STALKER-COP.exe switch

Hello I am asking about and mentioning this here for two reasons, The first is because if I have figured this right it will be benificial to all COP players regardless of whether you are playing the original game or a modded one. The second I'm still working on. So before some-one tells me to put this in a different section I will try to explain myself. On the COP Complete's Mod db page they have released a download that will be better explained if you go there and read it for yourself. It is not a mod but a replacement for the STALKER-COP. exe file in your COP folder. What it does is enables the game to better allocate memory usage, for some reason this feature was unenabled when released. People who's system may struggle to properly run this game due to ram problems or older operating systems or 32 bit ones etc should check it out. Although it has been made available through the COP Complete's Mod db page it is not specifically for Complete or modded games. Any-one may benefit from using it (That is the second reason). I hope I have got this right or I'll look like a right d**k, Nothing new there though, Anyway go and see for yourself. Regards Nasha

i'm confused - isn't this already set? i've checked all three versions of my xrEngine.exe (COP, CS, SOC) and they all have the LargeAddressAware flag set in the header.

X - app can handle >2gb address space

Angrydog; Does that mean it is a pointless task because the switch is already working, I was half expecting that one of the site boffins was going to tell me I had it wrong and that it was something else, But now I'm confused(Not hard to do though ), Have they got it wrong then?. You have obviously had a look at what they are saying and have(I would have thought) worked it out by now. Is it worth people doing it or does it already happen? I would also like to know because if so I have a question with regards to Win 7 64bit use. Hope you can help Nasha

for the sake of simplicity lets assume you have a windows 32-bit OS and 4GB RAM (now in real life we know that you'll never really see 4GB because the OS will reserve large chunks of the 4GB address space for system hardware like your motherboard, graphics card, etc. so maybe you'll see 3 or 3.5 GB)

so again, just for simplicity we'll stick with 4GB; the OS will split that RAM between the OS (2GB) and the application; in this instance, the 32-bit Stalker game (2GB).

now, if you want to give Stalker more ram to work with (to prevent those pesky 'out of memory' CTDs), you need two things. Stalker needs to be LargeAddressAware (so it can use >2GB memory) and you need to turn on the 3GB switch.

the 3GB switch forces the OS to allocate 3GB to Stalker and 1GB to the system.

so, like I said earlier, as far as I know, the Stalker games have been LargeAddressAware (LAA) since Stalker SOC Patch 1.0003. so any thing that sets the LAA flag to "ON" is unnecessary, since it's already set (unless it isn't). the only thing that is needed is to turn on the 3GB switch.

now, maybe there are other versions of the xrEngine out there that aren't LAA; I don't know.

if you have a 64-bit OS with 8GB RAM, running 32-bit Stalker (which should be LAA already); then Stalker has access to 4GB of memory (the highest address accessible to a 32-bit app). of course, if Stalker wasn't LAA then it would be limited to 2GB.

Right got it so if I am running Win 7 64 bit I dont need to do anything with regards to the 3GB switch. Is that right? It is already done?
So is that download on Completes mod any use to me or is it only of use to older systems and 32bit ones or is it actually no more than a lemon?

correct, the 3GB switch is for 32-bit only.

i don't know, the download changes the Stalker launcher (Stalker-COP.exe) and makes it LAA. but all that does is start xrEngine.exe, which runs the game (and that is already LAA).

i don't know anything about portable executables, someone else around here may be able to answer your question.

in my personal experience, running COP on Win7 64 with 12GB Ram, i've never had any memory issues, with or without mods and when i've looked in the Resource Monitor, xrEngine is using anywhere from 1 to 3GB of memory.

i guess if you are having memory issues, then give it a try. it will either work or it won't.

I was playing COP earlier, due to the SMRTER mod, i think my game crashed(got stuck in a loop where NPCs were supposed to talk(cutscene) and the guy just stood there...

Anyway, I bring up task manager to force quit the exe.. showed memory used was over 3gb.

Not sure if CoP, being the latest, supports multi core processors, but hopefully STALKER 2 will.. too many programs just use the first core and nothing else.. by no means do i fully understand how that allworks, but wouldnt the game run faster/do more with more processor power available?

SMRTER Mod is a great mod, love it, wish though it wasnt so "heavy" on load times and gamepaly.
