Graphics Driver Resetting

I haven't had this happen in a number of years.

Occasionally both in CoP and Cs the game will freeze, the screen will go black then will minimise a nice message from Windows 7 says that the graphics driver failed to respond and had to be reset - this leaves me in CoP with a black screen that I can only press quick save on and use ctrl-alt-del to get out of.

In Cs I have to reboot my pc to get anywhere.

I've check my card - all drivers up to date and the temp is staying within normal ranges.

Any ideas?

have you set the game to run as admin via the short cut you use to launch the game with? i dont know if that has anything to do with it but some time vista/win7 dont like running a program with out it being todl to do so.

but i know i have had my game go black but the screen will go to a tiny view like 400x200 but still be playable yet.

which has happen a lot so far and i have no clue why and this has happen with or with out xfire/fraps on or off.

but maybe i would try do a full uninstall of the gfx driver and then reinstall the gfx driver.

there is a proper way of doing so, but for me i no longer use driver sweeper. since it had a error last yr while i was on vista and it removed well over 300gigs of games and programs from it.

glad i had win 7 on my other raid0 set up other wise i would be SOL !! but since i didnt have system restore on i couldnt be saved but that normally doesnt like raid0 so it is a waste of hard drive space.

I have the same symptoms, but my card gets too hot (around 84 deg C). Got the fan cranked up and the problems go away.

Have an EVGA GTX 285.

Altho, you said your temps are normal... so dunno.

Your driver failed, it happens frequently with beta drivers. Try different ones. Usually takes me a couple of tries to find a stable one. Could also indicate a failing card, but that is usually accompanied by artifacting, freezing, symptoms will also appear just on the desktop or when playing videos etc...

how long have had this card? since i had the super clocked version but i fought it for 8 months and 7 rma till i finally gave up on it and sold rma #8 to someone else. but they know of it and still bought it and that is hwy i now own a 5870 no more problems.

but not all beta driver will cause such problem since i am a beta tester on a gfx driver web site. and they mod the gfx driver in which i test them which right now i am testing such driver as it is.

but i am a ATI tester this time around. but please refrain from saying well your using a beta gfx driver that is why your having this happen. that is pure BS.

i hate to say that but it is. cause i have gone threw a lot of gfx driver when i ran a nvidia gfx card and a lot of them where betas.

and then a modded beta driver is another world apart so yeah i do know whats going in a round about way here.

what we need is the driver number that he is using like 158.91 , 162.12 or what ever since he is using a nvidia gfx card those are the numbers we need all he needs to do is right click on the desk top.

go to nvidia control panel/top of main page and look for help which will be top right corner then click system information then write down driver version.

my server is running 196.21
since it has a BFG 6800 ultra 256mb AGP gfx card in it lol it is older then old !!!

the driver isn't a beta - its the latest from nVidia at it first started it with CoP on my older card (9500 GT) with an older driver (on both cards).

could it be a problem with the cpu or a power problem (something I've been a little worried about - 600 watt 17 amp psu)

I have the same problem and it looks like nVidias latest driver for Windows 7 is causing this...

196.21_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_international_whql

Think that the latest driver that works best is the...

195.62_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_international_whql

I have also tried the latest BETA driver but that does the same thing as the latest WHQL driver...

196.34_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_international_beta

I'll roll it back and see if it stops thanks

edit:

rolled back the driver and CS feels more stable - less jittering/flickering picture and less stuttering

Right this is getting stupid - I will describe exactly what happens:

I will be playing for at least a couple of days on and off - I everything will be fine - I will be playing for less than an hour, sometimes half an hour then the game will pause as if it was installing resources for the next area then the fan from my graphic card will shut-off (the background noise of my pc grows a lot less) then after a pause of upto 3 minutes the game will go to desktop and I get the message "your driver had to be reset". When I try to go back to the game I get a black screen and hear the game but can't see anything - I can quick save, but that's it.
