Which S.T.A.L.K.E.R game to get?

I'm completely new to the series, in that I just learned about this game from a friend. All of this time whenever I saw this game around, I assumed it was some sorta boring FPS shooter, I was dead wrong. My friend explained how it's a horror RPG based FPS, which is definitely the kind of game I'm looking for! With that said I've got a few questions.

1) If I can only purchase one game, which one from the series should I get? I was leaning towards the third one, Call of Pripyat, as I heard it's less buggy / glitchy than the others and overall "looks" better.

2) Is there any sort of multiplayer in any of the three games?

3) What does the STALKER complete mod do exactly?

4) Assuming I purchase the recent one, will I find it very difficult to follow the story, even if I spend a few hours watching story videos + reading it up on the wiki beforehand?

If you limit yourself to one game, then you are choosing between Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat. SoC has more freedom and atmosphere, while CoP is somewhat more linear. You might play through SoC and not encounter any technical problems at all, but not as likely as with CoP.

CoP does make references to the previous games, but they are not essential for following the story. You just get a little more out of it, if you play the games in order.

Thanks a ton for your very quick response! Unfortunately I do not have a lot of time to play these games, I have school starting up next month and am doing volunteer work for the next several weeks making my gameplay time quite limited compared to the rest of early Summer, so perhaps a more linear experience is for the best.

Can you sort of explain HOW it's more linear? I mean you can still explore the huge open world right? Are there any strong incentives to explore?

There was an IGN review of Chernobyl, and one of the main critiques was that there wasn't much of an incentive to explore, that you're just wasting ammo and can easily acquire the best equipment from sticking with the storyline.

In CoP, the world is split into several large locations. You can travel between the locations, but other characters can't. Unlike in SoC, monsters do not venture out of their hunting grounds and NPCs stick to predefined routes. The world of CoP is less glitchy, but also more predictable.

It is true that exploring the world won't get you much better equipment, but the world is so interesting, that it is worth exploring for curiosity's sake.

Personally, I like CoP the most. I do recognize that SoC is a more interesting game, but I just have little tolerance for bugs.

PS: regarding multiplayer — there is that, but it is not great and most servers are Russian.

COP gets my vote, It has additions such as the ability to upgrade both outfits and weapons. It has better mods although I would avoid Complete like it's the bubonic plague. It is a nice mod for SHOC but for COP it is buggy and basically terrible.

You should play vanilla first anyway. Ie no mods,

However if you do want to mod it go for visual modding so the game remains the same. There are two relatively new mods that Complete actually uses older versions of. They are Atmosfear 3 (Complete uses 2) and Absolute Nature 3 lite (again Complete uses an older version) There is also Absolute structures. All three have .exe loaders and are compatible with each other so you can just load one on top of the other in any order and away you go. You won't find a better looking, less buggy set up.

So my choice would be COP and if your only likely to play once and want to try it modded then play with the mods below.

Atmosfear 3
Absolute Nature 3 lite
Absolute structures

I chose Absolute Nature 3 lite because the last thing I heard was that the regular version had an issue with something in the all spawn but if thats wrong someone can correct me as you should use the regular if it is fixed.

Too bad you asked today, 2 or 3 days ago steam offered all the games in a bundle for 8,50€. Now the prices are back to the usual ~10€s but maybe they'll offer this bundle once again.

I have to say I'd suggest SOC. COP is the better looking, less buggy, more options etc etc game, but what caught me and most others here I think was the feeling SOC manages to deliver.

Complete makes it more beautiful and less buggy, although some other might wanna argue that. For me it did.
But or course there's tons of other excellent mods to find here and elsewhere.

Cheers

I'm using ver 3.01 at the moment, together with Structures, Atmosfear3 and ParticleParadise3 Swartz ver.
So far everything runs smooth and looks amahazing.

Oh, one thing that has to be mentioned is the Zone Reclamation Project. This is a mod that fixes a ton of bugs without changing gameplay. It is available for each of the three games.
