Call of Pripyat ( 2015 )

I'm currently in the middle of my longest SoC Game ever ( at almost
11 months Game Time ) and was wanting to try a CoP Mod. It crashed
horribly and was very unstable. I removed those components but in
both versions ( before and after the Mod ) I would get crashes that
had no bug trap info, nothing to see or read other than Windows
telling me something stopped working. My mouse even freezes after
the crash where I have to use control-alt-delete to close the X-ray
Engine. Anyway I'm not here to seek help or describe that any further.
I'm here to talk about my CoP Game. After 2 years of being a Tester
for Dez0wave, having it years before it was released and recently my
long unmodded SoC Game, it has been a long time since I have been
back with CoP. It didn't take long to get sucked backed into the story
and there's nothing better than having nothing and starting from scratch.

* * * * *

Even though I love the many multiple levels of open-ended SoC, one
cannot discard the sheer magnitude of being on the Skadovsk and
knowing the far reaches of Zaton are like several SoC levels combined
in any direction. Nights are a lot darker, mutants are more powerful,
and there are less safe places to seek when you venture out. You really
have to return to the ship each night until you get that first night vision.
Stalkers leaving each morning and coming back each night gives the
Game an immersion that is like nothing else. You look at names and
then see them in the outer reaches and often you later meet them back
on the Skadovsk or find their bodies in desolate places. It took me a
week to earn the money for a night vision helmet ( through Nimble and
the Clear Sky suit ) and venturing out in the night is always risky and
deadly. The Bandits own the night and they don't return to the ship
each night like some would say the Stalkers cowardly do. I do not get
in the middle of their firefights and readily give medkits to the wounded
of either side. I'll go into more detail on specific places, events and what
I have done and not done yet. I'm currently about two weeks into it.

Are you still using a mod? And which mod was it that 'crashed horribly'?

It started. Then crashed - crashed - crashed- crashed - crashed - crashed.
No bug trap. No idea what's wrong. Nothing to read or investigate further.

So I'm playing it unmodded and even then I'm having performance problems.
I thought I had played it under Windows 7 before but it wasn't installed on this PC.
Must be on my older PC I was having trouble with that was using XP. It ran fine on
that before I had unrelated trouble to any Gaming. Amazing how my newer equipment
makes things worse. Currently have crashes, freezes and momentary kicks to desktop.

Maybe delete user.ltx that ussualy gets left behind when deleting mods, and deleting it may improve performance as it will rewrite itself when you launch the game again.

Many mods change stuff in user.ltx that will make your game perform slow.

My new game was a little unstable too, so I save even more than usual.
Its working pretty well right now. I only installed a tiny mod to allow Owl to buy damaged weapons for only a small amount of money. I'm using Windows 7 64bit and a GTX480, but I used an older driver - the 314.22.
I've done the usual Artifact hunting and bought the Clear Sky armor set also. I forgot...I also put in AAO as its such an improvement in the sound and doesn't overwrite anything but ambient sound.
Keep us informed TS as I am also playing very slow.
Next...all those Zombified Stalkers and the first tools for my drunk buddy.

Should have gone for SGM 1.7 - in the vanilla game you already have advantages like knowing where the tools are. SGM has a number of possible locations for them. And if you can't find them you can buy their locations from Owl - 10,000 for basic, 20,000 for fine and 30,000 for the calibration set.

You also need to find two sets of tools for the military tech in Pripyat. They're even more expensive for the locations.

I think you're definitely missing out on all the added content in SGM. Like obtaining money from looting corpses, for which you need to buy special software for your PDA from one of the traders. Even Uncle Yar in Yanov has an extra task to offer.

Plus the SGM stashes, a banking system to increase your money supply, seven or eight different exos and many other suits.

Then there are the Alpha Squads - turn that option on at your peril, because it can't be turned off again, and those guys are tough buggers with BFGs (Big F**king Guns). I once had twelve different squads of six attack me in various areas of Zaton, occasionally linking up two squads so that you're facing 12 of them at once - and each squad has one guy with a .50 cal sniper weapon which, with the very best equipment available, is just about survivable, but it will savage your armor.

Their weapons include the L96 Arctic Warfare sniper, the aforementioned Barrett .50 cal, the Thunder 'Breakwater', a really nasty 5.56 assault rifle carried by the squad leader, a Protector and a FN2000. The guy with the Protector prefers to use his automatic Colt pistol.

There are also SGM achievements. One of them forces you to become a better shot - Viroshilov Marksman. To get that you need 300 kills by headshot and one notch for a faction leader on your rifle stock. That's usually 'Chapaev', the bandit leader - their base is the Forestry compound in Zaton. You can join any faction, including bandits and Monolith, and they all have a series of tasks. The Monolith's is probably the longest and most profitable.

Not too far into vanilla yet? Worth quitting and trying SGM 1.7 - the later versions have added maps, but 1.7 is all in the CoP map set.

I've done SGM 2.1 before so I know what you are talking about. At first, I just wanted it stable. The game doesn't seem to like the newer hardware very well. Plus, with Gamespy no longer working, and the DirectX so advanced from 2009 and the on-disc DRM etc, etc. It just isn't so easy to set-up as it was 5 years ago. I actually tried Smrter 4.1 at first but had too many problems. I might be in good shape now, so a Mod may be tried later.

Call of Pripyat ( 2015 )

It's been so long I am quite content not to muck up my Game further
with Mods. It's running better now with the exception of just Game
hesitation that seems to affect all the Games. I'm going to just keep
plodding ahead and my discussions now will be my current play through.

* * * * *

New Game ( old tips )

- At 8:00am each morning, the Stalkers leave the Skadovsk. Be there and
ask each squad leader leaving where they are going. This enables you to
have free travel and safe passage. Be ready to fight upon arrival as there
may be mutants or zombies ( after the saw mill is wiped out ) Know the
difference between the normal places offered ( those you are charged for
when you ask for choices ) and the places where the squads are going
that are never part of the list ( always take those and/or learn the names
of those locations as they are rare and unusual ). Fast travel is also very
beneficial when you are loaded with loot. At 18:00 each day, most all of
the Stalkers out and about, they return to the Skadovsk. Again fast travel
is free travel and safe passage. Use it to your advantage twice a day.

- Give Cardan 1 bottle of vodka: 10% discount. 2 bottles: 20% discount.

- Don't upgrade the AK-74 other than the scope mount until you get an
AN-94 from one of the military Zombies. Upgrade the AN-94 for accuracy.

- Don't kill Tuna. Take the Altered Wheel and immediately run across the
water ( may a bee line to the Skadovsk ) and you can escape him and his
men without harm. After you purge the Bloodsucker Lair his status will
improve from enemy ( red ) to neutral ( yellow ) so avoid going back
there or near there after you escape him until this action takes place.

- Wait until others can/will attack the Saw Mill with you. Wipe out all the
Zombies there. If you grab the tools and not kill the Zombies you will
get weak and poorly equipped Zombies for the rest of the Game. While
the same action will produce mega-Zombie squads ( until you are killed )
having them low rank and carrying meager equipment is not worth it.

- Completing the Bloodsucker Lair gives you the best reward that you
can get in Zaton. It is the Veles Detector ( best for artifact hunting ).
Don't gas the Bloodsucker Lair. At the steps down that lead to where
they stand, jump from there to the top of one of the nearby electronic
consoles where they can't reach you. Then use a shotgun to kill them all.
Do this on a second trip when you return by yourself to protect Grouse.
This allows you to return any time as the gas prevents return visits.

- Buy the Clear Sky suits from Nimble as soon as possible ( it is 40,000
rubles ) which it is the helmet that is the most valuable since it has 1st
generation night vision and can quickly be upgraded to 2nd generation.
It's up to you if you want to wear/upgrade the suit. I wear the Stalker
( Sunrise ) suit since it can be upgraded to carry more weight and can
have it's own weight reduced to 1.5 kg. I find no need to buy anything
from Owl as simple looting of the dead gives me everything that I need.

The higher the upgrades ( more expensive ) means armors and weapons
are more expensive to repair. This means avoid excess damage to your
armor in battle and when hunting for artifacts. Additionally avoid excess
use of upgraded weapons. Is it worth it to kill a dozen passing mutants
that don't harm you to have to spend 1,000 rubles for weapon damage?

More to come...
