Robert Briscoe ponders STALKER without weapons

I want it too! Here is the news article:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120306-Dear-Esther-Artist-Mulls-S-T-A-L-K-E-R-Without-Weapons

"I kind of quite fancied the idea of doing something on my own, something that's just completely of my own creation... I've always had this idea in my head, it's kind of like an open world, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-ish type game, but without weapons, and this horror aspect to it. I've obviously never had the opportunity to do it, the scope of it is huge compared to something like Dear Esther, even though Dear Esther ended up being much larger than I thought originally," he said in an interview with Joe Martin's Unlimited Hyperbole podcast. "Can't even believe I'm contemplating doing this kind of open world type of thing, I mean, it's just so unreal for one person to do. And this is the whole thing, I want to see if just one person could create a game on their own, to a degree that's probably not been done before."

Oh hell no.
If he was to make the ZONE as it was in the book/film and actually pull it off properly, it would be bloody awesome.

You definitely use guns and other weapons in Alan Wake. You just need to use your flashlight to make the Taken susceptible to them.

A better example might the Fatal Frame series. In those games your only defense is a camera.

Or even better, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. No defense against the monsters at all. And the darkness itself will drive you insane if you can't find a light source.

I have to agree that a game that was like Roadside Picnic and the Stalker movie would be awesome. Nailing the atmosphere would be a real challenge, though.

For one thing I guess it would have to be extremly slow paced. Like spending half an hour just moving forward a foot or two.

I found out about STALKER back in the summer of 2002 when the project's lead artist Andrew PROF Prohorov posted this classic image on render.ru:

http://www.render.ru/gallery/show_work.php?work_id=12747

Back then, I didn't pay much attention. "A game based on the Roadside Picnic?" — I thought. That could never work. Months passed until I started hearing more about the game and finally decided to register on this forum.

That reflects the state of gaming back then. That a game could be set in a slow-paced lethal environment without shooting monsters was unthinkable. When STALKER finally came out, I greatly enjoyed the quiet moments of walking through its landscapes and exploring its structures. The mutants detracted from the experience for me, if anything.

Recently, the indie game scene came into bloom. It brought us Dear Esther as a wonderful experiment with the sort of game I originally imagined. That the idea of a proper Roadside Picnic game might even be on the table now is huge progress.

I liked the slow artistic style of movie it was...but I need more in a game.
Here we are ten years later...wondering what comes next.

Don~

You're going to love Lost Alpha. There are many places where
it's nothing but you and nature. After an Apocalypse of course.

Stalker has some beautiful landscapes and areas, it's nice sometimes to just explore them and walk around especially when its raining, love it

Some stalker areas and landscapes reminds me of locations where i live. I like it.

Sometimes I wish I had something better than the knife like a sword or machette.
A Bandit was sitting on the ground leaning forward once and I got next to him trying
to stab him and my way too-short knife just stabbed the air in every direction uselessly.

Yes, I feel the same way.

I have yet to use any mods, but it would be really cool to find one that removes some of the (what I consider) unrealistic elements.
