Some of these laws are really silly - what's wrong with pistol grip, for example?

The politicians who come up with the laws know diddly squat about weapons and make up rules until they are satisfied it is possible to sue someone just about any way over any firearm. Especially with terrorist incidents on the rise :\

Sometimes I think politicians exist solely to ruin our fun with laws (eg, my country passed a law a while ago forbidding parents from smacking their children when they did something wrong, cause its aimed at the small 0.01% of the population who regularly beat their children badly enough to the point of hospitalization). The only good thing they provide: Entertainment. Sometimes their debates are so much fun to watch

The BATFE is an organization staffed by tax collectors, not drinkers, smokers, shooters or demolitionists. It takes its marching orders from politicians, who are about as far removed from reality as is possible without physically leaving the planet.

Will a class 3 licese grant me permission to own a laser guided rocket laucnher with thermonapalmic bunker busting missiles and antitank missiles? If so, would I be able to fire them at my farm, for example?

If you own the land you could try marking the border with a continuous fenceline, rejecting the constitution of the nation you are currently a part of, and declaring independence.

Then you could make up your own laws and do whatever the hell you damned well please - until your old 'homeland' invade your sovereign territory and incarcerate your population.

Nah, I'm fine with just the farm and the rocket launcher, if I can do the things I wrote above.

In the unlikely event that you could actually find a transferable specimen for sale, you'd need a license for each individual round of ammo.

Exactly right. The laws regarding what constitutes an "assault weapon" refer mostly to cosmetics (e.g. pistol grip, folding stock) which do not enhance the destructive capabilities of the weapon. The "assault weapon" is a bogeyman created to justify funding. 95% of government is a scheme designed to separate the taxpayer from his/her money.
