Copyright Issues Regarding STALKER Literature

First of all, I want to say that I'm not sure if I posted this on the appropriate forum. If it isn't, someone please let me know where to post it. Thanks in advance.

I'm currently writing a book that is loosely based on the story of Shadow of Chernobyl, and it will include many of the characters within it. However, my concern is that I might have to cancel my work due to copyright issues. My question is: will I have to ask GSC or any other entity for permission to write a STALKER book that is loosely based on their storyline? By the way, I'm also including "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." on the title of the book, if that requires permission as well.

There are others here more acquainted with the relevant legal terms here but it would be quite a bit safer to ask the people holding the original rights as to what and to what lengths you are allowed to go.

Thank you for the response. I hate to trouble you further, but do you know who currently holds those rights and in which way can I contact them?

Sadly I have not bothered to keep up with the recent clusterfuck of a happenings but as I said, there are others who are more acquainted with this field.
While I do not know much about the movements of other members (usually the Stalker Stories sub-section under the ShoC forum side) here, who are also writing fiction they plan to publish, I do know that Don Reba, our senior moderator should know quite a bit about your predicament and he is most commonly found in the Call of Pripyat section of these forums.

I'm quite sure you can't use the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. name...after that it depends on what names you use and you might need permission.

Thanks for the reply. I know there exists a few dozen books in Russian that use S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as their title, is there any particular reason as to why I might not be able to do the same? Anyways, I would very much appreciate if anyone could tell me who is the right entity to contact regarding these issues.

You might try an Email to Don Reba. He is the Administrator and closer to GSC than us.

It depends on whether you want to sell your book. If not, then it is just fan fiction, and you can do whatever you want — GSC won't bother you.

If you do want to sell your book, then you have two options. The first option is to remove specific references to the STALKER brand. For instance, if you make it about an anomalous radioactive Zone with zombies and artifacts that appeared due to a warehouse explosion near Chernobyl, you are free to do so. The other option is to try to publish the book with GSC. If you think it is good enough, I can get you in touch with the person in charge.

The Russian books were published by GSC.

I'm curious, what are GSC's standards for 'good enough'?

Judging by Captives of the Zone and Deliverance, they are not terribly high right now. But that might change once Snork Bait comes out.
