I recommend Windows 7 Prof x64.

I know Windows 8 is out but it might take a year or so to get all the bugs out of it.

Anyway I plan to stay with W7 for a looonnng time yet.

thanks for the replies. What exactly is the difference between Home premium and proffesional? I hear Win7 is better than Vista (which I have been using for the last few years).

I read some stuff about Windows 8 and I noticed how it's more aimed at touchscreen devices. I allready know I will never be using the fullscreen apps on my desktop, so it's gonna be Windows 7 for me too.

You can read about the differences here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compare

I myself am using Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. Windows 7 is better then Vista. I have had to have Vista installed because I help people with their computers on a forum. To me it feels like Vista is fighting me while Windows 7 feels much more like WinXP in its behaviour though most of it looks like Vista.

I've run SHoC on XP, Vista 64 Ult and Win7/64 pro & ult. Windows 7/64 has always ran the best for me. Just make sure you at least patch to 1.0004

I just went with Win 7 pro for the first time, I've always gine with home premium before. The reason I changed wass because I was told that Home premium is limited to 16 gb of Ram where as Pro and Ultimate can use as much as you get, (32 gb, 64 gb or whatever inbetween).

I'm wishing I went with Win 8 pro now. Also I saw the wei score on it goes to 9.9 where as it is 7.9 with Win 7. I wonder what sort of system will max that out. Hopefully the top Haswell processors will do it in there category.

Win7 Pro, Ultimate and Enterprise 64-bit versions can handle 192GB of RAM. Problem is only special software use more then 4GB and most games use less than 2GB (+ what the OS use) so the only reason to buy more then 4GB of RAM is because it's cheap, you have special programs that can use more than 4GB, because you like to have some programs installed in a RAM drive or you use a Virtual Machine like VMWare.

What Windows 8 goes, then it looks like some games that are only a few years old -including some that do run on Win7- are unable to run on Win8.
