VISTA / 8800 crashes fixed...

As many of you, when i pressed Escape to go to the menu to save i got dropped to desktop.
Like on "supreme commander" on vista, memory management seems to be the problem.
So you can fix that with this patch: http://files.filefront.com/3GB_enabler2zip/;6791818;;/fileinfo.html

PLEASE READ THE readme.txt FILE BEFORE !!!
This is for advanced users... If you don't understand this file, so forget this solution and wait for an official patch. And as always, I will NOT be held responsible for what happens to your Windows VISTA !

This patch/solution was release for supreme commander but it seems to works for me on stalker.
Just replace all "supremecommander.exe" with "XR_3DA.exe" on the startme.bat file.
This patch will modify the header of XR_3DA.exe to have this option: "Application can handle large (>2GB) addresses"

Important note:
"For Vista:
Vista 32 bit (not x64) needs to run this command instead of the XP boot.ini change mentioned in the readme.txt.
At a command prompt:
Code:
BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 2900

The readme.txt has the rest of the directions that should be applied in reference to the image header.
Vista x64 doesn't need the bcdedit, just run the startme.bat I supply as mentioned in the readme."

Thanks to MadBoris for this solution on Supremecommander.

Didn't work for me

Hey,

Thanks for the fix info but unfortunately it didn't help me. Applied the fix & the command and loaded the game - annoyingly it still crashes every time I try to quicksave (F6) or hit ESC... also someone noted on a different forum changing the read-only state for the game folder helps, but it didnt. I am using 8800GTX on Vista 32-bit.

How much longer do I have to wait until I can save my game *cries* Thanks though!

Strange that it doesn't work for you...
Ok just to confirm, can you try this:
open a command window and type:

editbin /LARGEADDRESSAWARE XR_3DA.exe
BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 2900

Then reboot.
It worked for me. No more crash.

My config:
Vista 32 Ultimate French / 2 GB RAM / 2 x 8800 GTX (SLI) with 101.41 beta driver
Stalker: Full Dynamic Lighting

Oops

I just checked the FAQ, and I think the reason for my constant crashing was that I was using the 100.65 Nvidia driver. I am now on BETA 101.41 and I haven't crashed yet... (I can play it finally!)

Now I don't know if it is the combination of new driver and your fix, but it seems to have done the trick! Thanks!!

Godd news !
Did you rebooted your computer after "BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 2900" command ? I think that it is very important to restart your computer after this command.
Before installing this patch, I was already running 101.41 beta drivers and the game was always crashing when i pressed Escape...
Waiting for others feedbacks.

IT WORKS!!!

OMG, thank you so much for this!

I can actually save the game now.

Just to clarify, you don't actually need to run that batch file. All you need to do is:

editbin /LARGEADDRESSAWARE XR_3DA.exe
BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 2900
Reboot

Works like a champ.

FYI, this was with on Vista Ultimate (32bit) with an 8800GTS.

Beta? The drivers or the game?

I have tried the beta drivers and, as the name suggests, they are under testing stage and cause problems with my system.
I can run Supreme Commander with no problems at all, as well as all other games.
My PC has not got a problem with the way it runs; the game, STALKER, has the problems and needs to be fixed.
Telling users to adjust system settings is fine, but what if this leads to windows crashing and having to be reinstalled? Are you going to visit us and do this for us?
I not only get freezes and crashes to desktop during saves; using Beta drivers causes the BSOD and complete system crash, plus GPU failure whilst running, of all things, videos.
So the above advice is not really an option, is it?

I can confirm this works, however first time i tried this (rebooted aswell) my game crashed loading my save. (i then proceeded to let vista automatically manage my page file, i had it set to 2GB).

Also updating to the 101.45 drivers helped smooth out some gameplay too imo.

Running vista ultimate 8800GTX,

Thanks!

Try this tip without installing Nvidia Beta drivers and tell us if it works too !
But if you think that it is dangerous, don't do it...You are a free man !
Read the readme.txt file before doing that.
Thanks
