Need advice for survival

I've been having a hard time surviving with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in the early stages and was hoping someone had some tips.

I am pretty sure I started at the Novice level, yet I get two-shot by guys at long range with sawed-off shotguns and those crummy starter pistols. I shoot them multiple times with my pistol and it is like they are laughing at me. With the shotgun, I cannot hit them at range but they take me down like they have a sniper rifle.

Any help?

Most important - think it over if you really need to engage in a given fight or, if your goal is something else, is it possible to sneak by and return later.
Taking detours means other hazards of course - increased radiation spots, mutant lairs, anomaly fields - you're in Garbage, right? Keep some antirads with you and try to take a route across the meadows on the east side of the map. (Actually, the same applies for Cordon - keep eyes open for an alternate route.) If your inventory is lightweight enough, you can outrun the mutants and even lure them into anomalies. Before you move, take a look at the area with binoculars - you get a better idea of any suspicious movement.)

Second - stay behind cover.
Crouch (ctrl, even better, shift+ctrl), lean out only slightly (Q and E), hold down right mouse button for better aim. Be prepared that many of your shots might miss and keep enough ammo with you. (The pistol ammo is easy enough to come by. If you don't do this already, then when checking the bodies of fallen, right click on the weapons to unload any ammo they might got.)

When you're in safety, make a named manual save before heading out. This gives you some stepping stones to go back to in case you find yourself "saved into the corner" with quicksave.

slow down and take your time. do some side missions to earn money and search everywhere for loot. you'll be amazed at how much gear is lying around, just waiting for you to pick it up. don't move on until you are prepared with weapons, ammo and supplies.

stealth and tactics win out over bravado and frontal assaults every time.

there is no penalty for going slow. some Stalker's have spent months in the Cordon before moving on.

as was said before, make lots of manual saves as you go along.

Break open all the crates and bluey white capsules you see they tend to hold goodies that will really help in survival also when in combat if you have them don't forget to utilise your medkits and bandages by pressing
[ for medkits and ] for bandages.

and just reiterating the point save often don't rely on quicksave or autosave

Speaking of -
if the default keys make your actions less smooth, assign new keys to the vital actions (open the options menu or change and save the user.ltx file).
Some functions are better kept close (meds, bandages, reload - for example, i use M, B and mouse4 respectively), others within a good distance (for example, i've placed qiuicksave and quickload fairly far from each other after some blunders; also, i've moved 'drop weapon' away from too easy reach and brought screenshot closer instead).

P.S:
Speaking of reload - make it a habit to reload before you stick your head out from the cover - even if your magazine is still half full

P.P.S:
Learn to aim and throw grenades - handy way to do a lot of damage fast. Holding down the righ mouse button when equipped with a grenade will let you remain on a standby, while adjusting your aim and building up the "throwing force" or whatever that's called (the circular progress display). It works the same with bolts, so you can practice with those.

A Shotgun is minimum in the Cordon.

Get an AK or Abakan as soon as you can.

Close in range use an AKSU.

Later get the Sniper Abakan in Rostok.

For starters like the first bandit assault or garbage is like others mention to know the path.

The intels come into play as you have to make sure how many enemy you are facing. if not you are going to get backstabed.

Of course as this is a FPS game you mouse/controller handling need more practice to get those headshot. Furthermore with starting pistol you have to do slow firing rate since it has the worst recoil. Make every bullet count. Of course when the enemy is reloading that it the moment you are waiting for by getting closer and wham! (enemy count intel applies)

Always moving as moving help dodge atks. Circling will confuse enemy and you might get a clean shot without retaliation. Use cover but dont stay too long. move from cover to cover.

Its NOT cowardice to run since those who retreat would fight another day. If overrun its best to run and come back later.

Always check bodies and leave none unchecked.

Yes, the AI has a hard time dealing with a running Stalker. For instance, if I run from point A to point B, enemies might fire at me while I run, but when I look back, they are all at point A pointing their guns at the ground.
