Success!!!

OK after reading the new tweak guides Stalker article I tried one thing mentioned in the section about stuttering and it worked divdends. That is I disable prefetching.

You do this by adding '-noprefetch' to the shortcut to your Stalker executable.

Now I can run the game on med/high settings with full dynamic lighting and overall good performance. It still stutters a bit but it does not lock and crash and it is minimal. This is a tremendous increase from being only able to just run the thing on static lighting with constant freezes and crashes.

So here's what I have done in total to sort my issues out;
- Applied the registry tweak (this fixed the crashes).
- Terminate the CCC and MOM (ie. ATI processes) before launching the game.
- Disabled prefetching.

I think that the root of Stalkers problems are how it handles caching, lets think about it, prefetching is where a game pre-loads resources it needs to memory before loading a level. I believe that under certain circumstances the game is loading too much stuff it doesn't need resulting in a lot of data being swapped out of and replaced from both your page file and RAM during play causing the stuttering. With prefetching disabled you get about 10 seconds of stuttering and caching at the start of a level as it loads necessary stuff and then it levels out into a very smooth ride with a little hitch here and there.

I think also that the ATI drivers clash with the games memory management in some way also.

In any case I am finally able to enjoy a pitch black night and some proper lighting and texture effects

3)) Vid_Restart doubles my FPS when my FPS's get low. Why??

Generally I get between 30 - 70 fps while playing the game with HIGH settings selected and lowering a bit of the grass density as well as maxing out the textures.

However, at times I find that my framerates drop into the mid - high teens.

In the past, I have attributed this to the current locale in the game as this tends to happen when I enter a higher density area (i.e. more vegatation, more buildings, more objects about, etc.).

Quite by accident I discovered that when this happens, if I go to the console and type vid_restart, my framerates will, 95% of the time, at least double back into the mid-thirties and often go higher.

Needless to say, I did nothing to change my point-of-view in the game, nor did I go mess with the graphics settings. All I do is go to the console, type it in, watch the screen blank for a sec, and then everything is once again smooth as butter..... until the cycle repeats.

Hard to measure how long until the cycle repeats as it depends upon where you go on the map.... but tonight during about and hour and a half of gametime, it happened twice.

Could this be some type of GPU memory leak??

I'm running XP SP 2, 7800 GTX SLI, X2 4800 , 93.71 drivers and play at resolution 1600x1024.

I'm using FRAPS to measure the fps, and just leave the display running in the upper right while I play.

I'm curious for thoughts or whether other people can replicate this.

As many of you, when i pressed Escape to go to the menu to save i got dropped to desktop.
Like on "supreme commander" on vista, memory management seems to be the problem.
So you can fix that with this patch: http://files.filefront.com/3GB_enabler2zip/;6791818;;/fileinfo.html

PLEASE READ THE readme.txt FILE BEFORE !!!
This is for advanced users... If you don't understand this file, so forget this solution and wait for an official patch. And as always, I will NOT be held responsible for what happens to your Windows VISTA !

This patch/solution was release for supreme commander but it seems to works for me on stalker.
Just replace all "supremecommander.exe" with "XR_3DA.exe" on the startme.bat file.
This patch will modify the header of XR_3DA.exe to have this option: "Application can handle large (>2GB) addresses"

Important note:
"For Vista:
Vista 32 bit (not x64) needs to run this command instead of the XP boot.ini change mentioned in the readme.txt.
At a command prompt:
Code:
BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 2900

The readme.txt has the rest of the directions that should be applied in reference to the image header.
Vista x64 doesn't need the bcdedit, just run the startme.bat I supply as mentioned in the readme."

Thanks to MadBoris for this solution on Supremecommander.

You need to open command prompt as an administrator...

Type into the start menu search bar, "cmd", but instead of hitting the Enter key, press Ctrl[plus]Shift[plus]Enter, this will allow an administrator command prompt, it will pop up with an authentication request first.

Sometime 'editbin /LARGEADDRESSAWARE XR_3DA.exe' may not work, so forget about that and just do the BCDEDIT command.

The Editbin command is the same exact thing as using the Batch file provided in the archive.

If you don't feel safe about editing the Batch file to be useable with Stalker, then download my edited one: http://rapidshare.com/files/23252938/3GB_Enabler.zip

Simply put, for Vista users;

Extract the ZIP archive to a folder of your choosing. (Such as your desktop.)
Make a backup of your original XR_3DA.exe file.
Copy or Move your XR_3DA.exe file into the folder you extracted the 3GB Enabler to.
Run the 'Startme.bat' file, follow the instructions.

After that's all done...

VISTA 32:
Open command prompt as Administrator.
Type: 'BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 2900' (without quotes)
REBOOT.

VISTA 64: You do not need to do anything else, just start the game and play.

Hopefully that clears up any confusion and makes it easier for users to apply this fix.

Possible solution to stutters and lockups

Disable Prefetching

It was asked in another thread that I make this information more readily available instead of scavenging through a 20 page thread, so here it is.

So, how do you disable prefetching?

Simple! I included some pictures for reference.

First, find your STALKER shortcut, and right click it. Click the properties tab, as seen here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/M0ldyM1lk/12312.jpg

Next, add the "-noprefetch" command to the target line.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/M0ldyM1lk/5633.jpg

You'll notice that I also have the "-nointro" command, which disables the THQ logos, etc upon startup and takes you right to the menu. After placing the command, click "Apply", then boot up Stalker.

---END QUOTATION---

Preloading of game-specific information. Basically, when you're playing a game, things like objects and textures need to be loaded, and if the game has lots of these objects/textures/whatever to load, it will slow down because it needs lots of hardware power to do load all of this quickly. Prefetching makes it so that much of these resources are actually loaded prior to you starting to play. So when you're staring at the "loading.." screen, that information is actually already being cached, and is then ready to be loaded when it is needed. I can't explain it in any simpler terms.

Oh yeah, and the reason why disabling prefetching is actually making performance better, and causing less "stutter" or pauses, is because STALKER is too aggressive in prefetching. That is, it loads too much information into your RAM memory (which is faster than your hard drive memory), and since many people don't have enough RAM to have all that information fit in it, some hard drive memory (virtual memory, or "pagefile" ) needs to be used. When those resources are then needed by the game, it has to wait until the resources are swapped from you slow hard drive memory to your RAM. This causes stutter, and even crashes.

If it were so simple the devs would have changed that.
In my opinion (based on what I've seen in the game config files) the prefetch was intended for the data streaming when the Zone was planned to be united, without transitions. Somehow it was left checked in the release version.

5)) Performance issues with Multicore CPU and Nvidia graphics? Try this...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl should utilize your dual and quad core processor natively and automatically. Running a dual or quad core processor is one of the best ways to improve performance.

The above is a quote from GSC’s readme file. However, based on my observation of the performance monitor on my G15 keyboard while playing the game; only one core of my 3GHz Pentium D processor was being used to its full potential - and was maxed out for much of the game - while the other core was barely above idle.

Note the use of ‘was’ in my description of the situation. I’m pleased to inform you that I have found a solution that has greatly increased the game’s performance - on my system at least - and could have the same effect on your system Furthermore, this solution should also work for you Windows Vista users out there.

1. Go to http://www.nHancer.com download and install this utility, which gives you access to the advanced properties of your video card. I’m running a Geforce 7950GT on Windows XP, but it also supports the 8800 series and Vista.

2. Then create a profile for Stalker, and click first on the ‘compatibility’ tab on the right hand side; tick the checkbox for ’CPU Multicore Support’ at the bottom of the list of functions, then click on Multicore. This function was designed to add multi core support to older games which do not support it natively.

3. The profile you just created must be activated manually to use it in Direct3D games like Stalker, so you must highlight it in the list of profiles, and tick the ‘can be activated manually’ box

4. To activate the profile, at the top of the screen select: Tools/Activate Profile, and then click on the Stalker profile you just created.

5. Minimise nHancer and launch the game. You need to have the program running each time you play to provide this enhanced performance.

I was disappointed with Stalkers performance with my card after I installed the game, and like many others had to use the ‘tweaked’ (downgraded) user.ltx file which is circulating on the net to get a decent frame rate.

After creating and applying this profile, apart from a brief initial frame rate drop directly after loading a level; the performance for the rest of the game has been solid even with all the detail sliders maxed out and dynamic lighting switched on. The game still maintains a good frame rate during lightning storms, which have been the bane of many players.

The CPU usage looks more balanced, and this increased performance seems to allow it to process information in memory faster too, so it should eliminate the ‘memory leak’ problem reported on these forums.

"registry tweak"? Details?

I've done the "no prefetch" fix and that added perhaps another 5 minutes of trying to play this game before it crashes (from 5 minutes before) BUT I've read several referances here to a "registry tweak" yet havent yet found details explaining exactly HOW one does this (and yes, I've done a search and viewed the tweak guide too, still not seeing it).

Can someone please either explain how one does this in detail or provide a link (preferably not to a 25 page thread where I've seen it mentioned).

Thanks in advance

Oh yeah.....I DO have an ATI card so perhaps I'll just need to be patient but I'll try the registry tweak and see if that helps.

The game looks, runs great on my PC, default settings besides the "no-prefetch" for ~ 10 minutes (now) until it'll freeze, then the screen goes black. Only a reboot gets me back.

6) Game does not start after installing the patch

Taken from the knowledge base post, may be of some help.

The game does not start up after installing the patch.

Cause: the patch comes with the most recent version of OpenAL, to make EAX work correctly.

Solution: install the latest audio drivers or go to the folder windows/system32/ and remove the old version of the library ct_oal.dll (Creative) or nv_openal.dll (nForce2).

Skybox Hall of Mirrors Effect (Duplicating Horizon Objects)

Skybox Hall of Mirrors Effect (Duplicating Horizon Objects) - for searching

For owners of GeForce 6 series cards, I highly recommend using drivers from Guru3D.com. The nVidia drivers have not yet been updated for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on this series. In fact, nVidia hasn't upgraded their driver base for this series in years. Anyway, use the following links:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1609 Windows XP 32bit Driver
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1602 Windows XP 64bit Driver
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1611 Vista 32bit Driver
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1612 Vista 64bit Driver

Install, BE SURE TO RESTART, and enjoy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in Fullscreen mode on your GF6 Series card...

look for the word "PagedPoolSize" and right click it. click "modify" under "valuedata" put in ffffffff

Right click on REG_DWORD (any of them in the middle)and NEW>DWORD Value.

a new value will show up at the bottom of your list.
right click that value and rename it PoolUsageMaximum.

after you renamed it right click it again and click Modify.
under ValueData put in 00000028 and thats it your done ..

Mannequins (EDIT: sorry, Spazz's) registry Tweak suggestion above helped me with the CTD's; in short, here's what I did to get a stable, bug-free game looking like it should:

1) Uninstalled the entire program, INCLUDING, (THIS IS IMPORTANT!) the Stalker folder with the .ini files in the "public" folder, (you must do this manually) NOTE: apparently deleting your saved games as well seems to be another important part of this; you can't save them somewhere and use them with the new install, otherwise there's a chance the graphics will revert. Obviously however you will lose your saved games.
2) Reinstalled and patched.
3) Opened Regedit, went into my system registry to this folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management
and changed these two values:
"PagedPoolSize"=dword:ffffffff
"PoolUsageMaximum"=dword:00000028
4) Also downloaded NVidia's "Nhancer", made a Stalker profile and enabled dual core processing

The ONLY other thing I did was download and install the 'NoHeadbob' Mod, the creator of which I would love to give a big wet sloppy kiss to... makes the game playable without the Dramamine.. Now the game looks great, runs great and I'm not afraid to progress for fear of losing everything. I even fixed the problem with the nights not getting dark!

I uninstalled the entire program first because I had tweaked and tweaked so much that it didn't resemble the same game anymore, and after reinstalling it looked 10x better, but still had the CTD's. The Registry fix seemed to have fixed that.

I've got a brand new box, E6600, 2GB ram, 8800GTS Vista32 playing at 1920 * 1200 on a Dell 24" widescreen.Built this just to play this game and have scoured the net looking for the save game crash fixes, tried em all (I'm a programmer in the real world). On my system the enable memory fixes causes an xray engine crash on startup of the game making it unplayable. I've been sitting here for the last 3 weeks without being able to play this neat game waiting for patch2 to hit the deck. Sigh. When its going, its wonderful.
I'm waiting for the devs to fix it. (and it has been according to the patch list!)

Yeah, installed those straight away. Looking at the crash the engine is having trouble allocating memory to capture a screen image to go into the saved games list, no vidro driver is going to stop that particular crash. Patch 2, I need you! Cheers...

Have you tried the new Official drivers from NVidia, out a few days ago?
[link] http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_158.18.html [/link]

Some say these help.

Yeah, installed those straight away. Looking at the crash the engine is having trouble allocating memory to capture a screen image to go into the saved games list, no vidro driver is going to stop that particular crash. Patch 2, I need you! Cheers...
---END QUOTATION---

There are two known memory "hacks" in circulation; one specifically for the registry (have not tested), the other that only requires you to edit the XRAY engines executable. I've tested the 2nd on a Vista64 machine and, despite game/content related issues I have not had any problems saving/loading games since that first week of purchase (which was hell ).

Edit: btw, the link in your quote is missing a closing brakccte on the first [link] element; "]" that bracket; that's why the quote is broken.

Running in Windowed mode may fix crashes

I found this out a few days ago, and someone else posted a thread saying they'd found it too.

If you uncheck 'Fullscreen' in the view options so the game plays in a window it seems to make it much more stable. You can make the window the same size as the desktop and drag the taksbar off the bottom of the screen and it looks no different from playing fullscreen.

Since doing this, I've yet to have a crash after 4 days of solid playing. Previously I'd get a crash after about a minute of gameplay.

Glad to see you back.

Glad to be back. Had to refresh my system for a while.
Had anyone already had the success with finishing the game, or the bugs hold you up?

I'm on my 4th playing of this game. I've had 3 different endings, of which the last ending was incredible and mind blowing. You need to play this game at least 3 times through and do different things as you will get different endings. I've had my problems with video issues also. Weird artifacting etc. I upgraded my power supply added 2 gig of ram. This game likes power and RAM! I still can't use dynamic lighting which is a bummer. I have to use static and a res of 1280x1024. And.... here are my system specs. A Gateway 5228 Dual core 4200, 4 gig ram, 7900gt/gtx video card, latest drivers 400 watt psu, win xp all updated, Samsung 225bw 22 inch monitor and I still can't run the game above 1280x1024 res and high graphic settings. No AA or anistropic filtering.
Still with all the problems I've encountered this is the most awesome game I have ever seen. No wonder there are problems. Look at the detail that has gone into this game. This game is a masterpiece of work.

After I have played and completed STALKER on XPSP2 several times, I thought I would install the game under Vista 32bit Ultimate and see how it behaved. Well, the second F6 I applied -> you know CTD as seems to be affecting many Vista users. So I thought I would have a hunt around these forums to try some of the workarounds posted.

The game actually looks and performs much better on Vista as On_Target600 claims particullarly with the current 158.18 nVidia driver set also I use the latest RivaTuner to increase the GPU fan speed to 100% all the time to lower the temp of the card.

Unfortunately the stutter is still there same as XPSP2, and for some reason that stutter seems to get worse with the more inventory that Marked 1 carries? In fact, I have noticed in the XPSP2 install of this game that on 1 occasion I decided to dump every piece of inventory that M1 had and it hardlocked the game and the system for at least a minute and just as I was to press the reset, it freed up, but on resuming, the stuttering almost was non-existent when running or walking particullarly near those trees at the entrance to the little village at Cordon where the trader resides.

Anyway On_Target600 thanks for your links and post, the Fix you quoted works perfectly so far for my Vista install with this game and the value of the fix is that it's applicable to all games very easily. I hope others give it a try.

Cheers

I was having the same problem and I believe I've found a work-around.

You'll need to bring down the console and adjust the r2_sun_depth_far_bias value. It has a range of -0.5 to 0.5 with an apparent default of 0. Positive values make it more pronounced while negative values 'fix' it. Starting with -0.00001, I've selected a value of -0.0001 which seems close enough to the default value. The pattern starts to disappear around -0.00007 or so.

So, press ` to get to the game console and type:

r2_sun_depth_far_bias -0.0001

and hit enter.

You should see the problem disappear.

This seems to remove the 'black lines' (looks like a filtering bug with either ATi's driver or the game engine). I haven't seen any obvious side effects from this tweak yet. Let me know if this works for you.

click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , then "SYSTEM", then "CurrentControlSet" then "Control" , then "Session Manager" ,then the folder , "Memory Management."

look for the word "PagedPoolSize" and right click it. click "modify" under "valuedata" put in ffffffff

Right click on REG_DWORD (any of them in the middle)and NEW>DWORD Value.

a new value will show up at the bottom of your list.
right click that value and rename it PoolUsageMaximum.

after you renamed it right click it again and click Modify.
under ValueData put in 00000028 and thats it your done ..

like i said before it might not work for everyone.

With the new patch does this regedit have any benifit with Float32? If not how do i set my reg settings back to default?

I was havng a frustrating time with all the crashing and lock ups caused by this game. After rummaging around for something to fix while waiting for the next patch, I am now able to get a smoother game. I set the game to static lighting. That seemed to cut the problems out completely. I found that odd because my graphics card isnt so bad. I also rolled back my drivers to 7.3. The -noprefetch tweak did not work for me and I do not use it, but feel free to try. The game also seems more stable if I press the Numlock key on my keyboard and turn it off before playing.

You are the first and only person to give thanks or even a comment for that matter. I became very disappointed in the stalker community to the point that I have not been back here for weeks. I am not alone in this lack of courtesy. I have seen many other peoples solutions to problems go un-thanked.

Please people take a leaf out of ozgamer's book. I spent a great deal of time, at least 30 hours researching, testing, reading everyones vista posts and attempting to write a clean and concise fix for the problem. There was no benefit for me to do this except to help those with problems play this fantastic game.

Remember that people on these forums who help you solve your problem are doing it out of kindness. They are not paid, so a little thanks goes a long way. Not only does this show the person that they didn't waste their time it also tells others that the applicable fix works.

No Problem on_target600

The information you kindly made available to these forums has worked exceptionally well for me and I doubt that I'm the only one that has used your suggested fix.

As I stated in another post in an effort to help some (should I say?) "incompetent" Vista user, I have in fact finished the entire game on Vista WITHOUT ONE CTD since applying your suggestions.Maxed setting and at the hardest difficulty.

It really makes me wonder about the thankless attitude of some people on Game forums? But so be it, that certainly won't affect the enjoyment that this game has bought to me and also the interest generated and the learning achieved by reading and trying out solutions posted by people such as yourself.

I wish you well.

Regards

Big thank you to Ontarget and Ozgamer (take note GSC & THQ)

I would like to thank Ontarget and Ozgamer for providing a solution to the ‘crash to desktop problem’ on Vista. This is yet again a problem solved by an unpaid individual, which should have been easily sorted out by GSC or THQ.

As I understand another THQ game called Supreme Commander had the same issue and lessons were clearly not learned from this. Funny enough the new Stalker patch 03 has ‘App can handle> 2gb adressest’ already ticked but you have to run ‘bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072’ yourself. This means the new patch was trying to resolve the problem but messed it up or forgot this detail when it was released. The second part is meant for Vista 32 and does not apply to 64 users.

Thanks to Ontarget I will now be enjoying the great game that is Stalker  In future, when THQ or GSC release a game of interest, I will not purchase it until all the major issues have been resolved. Hopefully they will not rely on unpaid individual users to sort out their problem. I think GSC should send Ontarget a modest cheque of £600 as his brilliance has stopped me from sending the game back for a 3rd refund.

I'm very happy that you can play the game now. It does look very good on Vista hey?

Sure enough, but I am very critical of the fact that it should NOT be up to the customer to have to fiddle around to get the product to work. 1 of my Son's is still waiting to play Supreme Commander on line as an example.

To some people such as myself, STALKER is probably worth the effort of the extra fiddling around to get it to work, but only the individual can really decide that.

Cheers

How to crash to desktop.

I just might have figured out how to crash to desktop rather than have to re-boot, I think it loads that bug squasher program but it fails to show that on the screen, and theres no mouse response since I suppose its still focused on the cross-hair. I've found that if I hit TAB, TAB, ENTER, I will blindly navigate to the invisible close button and go to desktop. I'd like some other people to try it and see if it works for them, I'm sure if you have that problem you will, I hate having to hard reset. (if I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, I can navigate to the task manager, but for some reason cant navigate the task manager with mouse or keyboard to end Stalker) It might just be in the case of my particular crash right now...

I'm having the crash when you try to load the level after Army warehouses, the one with the brain scorcher, on the mission to destroy it. Its called red something. It locks up when the progress indicator says "loading CFORM," every time. I've tried static lighting, uninstalling float 32, I already have -noprefetch and the registry hack applied, (before that I had lockups like this every 5 minutes.) Oh, and I also have joined freedom by wiping out that duty sqad by the farmhouse, it still locked up after trying finishing that mission by talking to the main Freedom dude, I guess that might have nothing to do with it but I'm going to go try joining Duty instead, and then try skipping doing either.

Great game though, and amazingly better looking with float 32 and some user.ltx tweaks, have the devs considered rolling these into the next patch?

I second that! This solution seems to work perfect indeed. I immediately started playing Stalker as soon as I installed my new computer. It looks totally awesome on a high-end machine, but the F6 bug was driving me crazy.
Since I tried this solution Stalker hasn't crashed to desktop anymore. I can quicksave whenever I want. No more problems!! So many thanks for your contribution! (Also Thanks to the guy who wrote the german page!)`

I uploaded some pictures to show how nice the game looks on my new machine
The dynamic lighting effects are absolutely jaw-dropping....

Have you edited fsgame.ltx?

I've played STALKER under XP (AGP 6800) and Vista (PCIx 8800) with no probs until recently, when I began to get crashes (Esc, F6, and random). It started when I reinstalled Stalker after the AVG Obfustat stunt. The 3G mod helped, except that the game crashed when I hit Esc.

Problem was that I forget to edit fsgame.ltx after the install!

So, for what it's worth: if you are having crash probs and you use mods, check your fsgame file (in the main install folder). But I would recommend taking the trouble to make the 3G mod. It's not nearly as difficult as it looks. (Hard to understand why Vista has this memory limit when mobos routinely can take up to 32 gigs of RAM.)

btw I tried the no_prefetch angle. it worked but led to some serious stuttering when the set got crowded.

---END QUOTATION---

The limit applies to 32 bit Windows (any version) which can only use up to 4GB RAM. This is roughly the max number you can represent with 32 bits (all ones), so an app, like a game, or Windows can't call on an address higher than that. 3GB fix extends the amount of space STALKER can use in pagefile and takes away what Windows normally assigns itself for a total of 4GB. 64 bit shouldn't have this problem because it can address astronomcal amounts of memory.

Microsof hotfix fo Vista

Microsoft released a hotfix for Vista that change how the WDDM handles its video memory management. Anandtech uses STALKER to benchmark the hotfix and it seems that it reduce the virtual address usage.

---QUOTATION---
Now the WDDM will not default to using its full memory management capabilities, and more importantly it will not be consuming virtual address space unless specifically told to by the application. This will significantly reduce the virtual address space usage of an application when video memory is the culprit, but at best it will only bring Vista down to the kind of virtual address space usage of XP.
---END QUOTATION---

http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=3060

There is also a part1 and part2 articles that they explain in depth this situation and also explanations of how to check the virtual adrress space consumption by an application. I think that most of the crashes in STALKER with windows vista are due to the way vista manage the virtual address space. With patch 1.003(makes the game LARGEADDRESSAWARE) and an 64bit OS this problem can be eliminate.

That's exactly my problem and I was going to put an answer because I found the only fix for me was going back to 81.98 drivers! I am downloading from your link now - so thanks! Glad you put the right answer or I would have put the wrong one!

The drivers are published by Nvidia, if that's what you mean. It's explained in the link page that corresponds to your OS (XP, Vista?). Guru3D is very reputable and has a good forum that can help you with the driver issue. Even if the drivers are not WHQL'd by MS, WHQL is basically meaningless. There are many 9x.xx (and higher) drivers and you could try. I've been OK with 91.31 and 94.24 (7900GS) and use a free driver cleaner between changes gotten from that site's forum.

Amazing! I was just getting ready to d/l the patchs and read this post. Changed game play instantly. Stuttering almost compleatly gone.
Thanks for the post!!!!

Interesting, thanks, I'll give that a go!

Player shadow issue

Hi guys, new to the forum, so here's a pre-emptive apology to anyone I may tick off.
Anyway, I've been playing SHOC for a while now, originally played vanilla, now I am playinh the OL Mod 1.2 for v1.0005.
I was just looking at a vid on Youtube where the Marked One has a shadow in first person mode.Just to clarify, I am running all settings at max, and an edited user.ltx, so Full Dynamic Lighting is enabled etc. All NPC's have dynamic shadows, as well as all the environments etc. So basically everything has shadows except for my player model in first person mode. I do have a shadow in 3rd person mode.
Note: While in 3rd person mode, I have a shadow generated by the sun, but also a shadow generated by any AI flashlights or indoor light sources.
I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas?
The video in question can be found on youtube, search "Tough times in stalker" to find it, and you can see at 01:12 there is a player shadow projected onto the wall in front of the player, and also on the ground beneath the player at the start of the vid.
Thanks

I have a problem with long long times for items in crates, stashes and NPCs etc. After i brake for example a crate i have to hang around for like 15 seconds and wait for the items inside to appear.Same with NPCs who can "spawn" in front of me.I know it's a problem with dual-core but setting the processor affinity doesn't solve the problem.Does Anyone know what to do please?

---END QUOTATION---
Was there ever a cure found for this problem?

I have grown tired of having to type vid_restart every few minutes just to play the game.

FIX to Vista machines not finding saves.

Stalker isn't reading saves because it is looking for filesnames that exist in XP but not in Vista.

If you open up the Stalker files such as: C:\Program Files (x86)\stalker shadow of chernobyl or if you have the Steam version C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\stalker shadow of chernobyl you will find a file called fsgame.ltx

Open this file in wordpad.

The first line (meant for xp) reads:
$app_data_root$=true|false|C:\|Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STALKER-SHOC\

The correct line for Vista should be:
$app_data_root$=true|false|C:\|Users\Public\Documents\stalker-shoc\

Replace the first line with the correct line for Vista and it should work fine.

A more permanent fix would be for the installer to recognize (or ask) what OS is being used and install correctly.

ElitesamuraI26, how about some details on your "black screen glitch"?

Is it a "monitor out of sync" problem? That is, when you launch the game, you see the splash screen, then a black screen appears. There are several workaround/fixes for that. One is to press the Q button to quit the game when you hear the music after starting the game, then find and edit user.ltx in your STALKER-SHOC\ subdirectory in your public files directory, default C:\Users\Public\Documents\ (Vista/Win7) or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\ (XP).

There you can set rs_fullscreen off and save the file. Restart STALKER. It will appear in windowed mode. Enter the Options dialog and click the Video tab. You can click the Advanced button and examine the last two checkboxes, one for "Vertical sync" and one for "Frequency 60Hz". These should be set according to the needs of your monitor. When they are set correctly, you can recheck the "Full screen" checkbox on the Basic page and click the Use button.

Alternatively, you can force a 60 Hz refresh rate (or whatever your monitor supports) in your video control panel applet.

Is it a "screen stays black after a video cutscene" problem? That could be due to a driver, codec or STALKER mod problem.

Is it a "screen blanks out occasionally" problem? That might be a video card encountering a problem, and the driver then recovers by resetting, resuting in a blank screen. A driver update (or rollback to a compatible version) might help, or maybe you can check the effectiveness of your GPU's cooling, as well as the power supplied to it.

There may be other causes and other solutions. You might want to start a separate topic thread if this wasn't enough to fix the problem.

You should make a new topic, this thread is intended for solutions to known problems.

Also, try taking a screenshot using the in-game screenshot key (can't remember what the default is) and see if your shot has the same problem.

I have this annoying issue where certain objects glow in the dark. Here's a pic taken in the underground parking lot in Pripyat.

http://i42.tinypic.com/t71u1u.jpg

Also to note, in Pripyat I noticed there are some invisible buildings by where the military spawn. I have vanilla textures installed and I'm only using SWO 3.1, so Idk what's causing this either.

To fix the glowing objects, I tried removing SWO 3.1 and the problem still persists, I also reset my user.ltx so Idk what's going on.

GOOD LUCK

My Stalker SOC had the same problem, easily fixed in windows 7

1. Go to device manager and go to graphics properties
2. go to update driver
3. browse my computer for software
4. then LET ME PICK FROM A LIST
5. choose between the drivers til u find the one u need

note I HAD TO USE A AMD DRIVE THE GO BACK TO MY ATI TO WORK PROPER

HOPE THIS HELPS
