I took a glance at the Stalker Wiki. As always there's some wildly inaccurate information there. This is due to people modding their game or the usual "I only used the ZRP and it only fixes bugs and it still gives me the vanilla experience" misconception. Then they mindlessly edit the Stalker Wiki and forever corrupt the Stalker Universe with misinformation.
I have always found Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov in Rostok when I first arrive in Rostok. For unknown reasons, the Stalker Wiki says he usually leaves Rostok ( Bar area ) before the Player arrives. In the past, in a slower long Game ( for me ) after being there on many visits, he usually eventually dies in a campfire/body collision in Rostok making getting the task ( limited to 24 hours ) very difficult. The difficult part is that you have to take the three sequential assassin jobs from Sidorovich every time in order to instigate the availability of the Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov assassination job.
So currently I'm doing a faster, quicker Game this time and as expected Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov and Sparrow are awaiting me when I arrived. I did a few trips back and forth to the Cordon for various tasks and initiated the assassin job tetralogy. I don't have time to waste. I could do the rush through the Dark Valley after getting the job. It's after the Player completes X-18 that Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov feels the need to travel.
I'm going to the Dark Valley soon but not yet. I'm ready for Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov's death now in Rostok. I'm not waiting around for the unpredictable spawn death. I try a few variations of the silenced pistol, silenced viper and knife, even when I think no one is looking but to no avail. His kill results in the Duty alarms and my death by everyone against me. There has to be another way.
Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov and I do the dance around the Rostok Water Tower. Like Sparrow, he patrols the square around the Arena. I get near him and pull out my pistol and shoot him to wound. He turns "red" as my new enemy and I turn around and high tail it to the roof of the building just above the Duty base entrance. In previous patches of the game, Loners who entered Duty territory were shot but not in later patches like the 1.0006 but even so Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov doesn't take the bait. However I found that he has an ally. Another Loner ( just one, whereas the Stalker Wiki incorrectly says two to three well-equipped Loners will aid him ) is shooting at me too and pacing around the building I'm on the roof of.
I jump off and run out the main square and into the long hallway building where the "Get out of here Stalker!" Dutyer patrols. It is here I'm trying to lure Oleg's buddy outside. With a lot of effort I finally draw him out and his crappy shotgun marksmanship is easy to avoid. Running down to the Duty sentries I duck behind one as Oleg's man goes back and forth, hiding, squatting and taking pot shots in my direction. As expected with the death of a Dutyer, the other Dutyers wake up and quickly execute him.
Now I just have to deal with Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov. He's a lot smarter and not as easy to maneuver into similar situations. I do try though. I even attempt to do some bouncing grenades at him but any time I kill Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov, everyone tries to kill me. When Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov is shooting at me, others around us go on alert with drawn weapons but they do not interfere. I even get some more NPCs wounded but none killed. Round and round we go until I take things further and I am able to wound him with my pistol. He falls to the ground and does not get up. He tries several times though.
Once in a previous game I had a Mercenary that I wounded inside Rostok right at the level changer to the Army Warehouses. He was a spawn replacement I made go on-line that I was not normally supposed to encounter in that stretch as he was headed to the Wild Territory. I let him be. Later as I entered the Wild Territory I found him moving further west but always on the ground wounded. In other words, in off-line mode he could travel but going on-line made him fall to the ground again among the Bandits & Mercenaries in the narrow passageway which was his final destination. Eventually passing mutants killed him but he was wounded for many return trips where I never hurt him further.
I mention this knowing this might happen with Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov if I left. However I knew waiting around would be no better especially with the clock ticking. Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov would either stay that way or eventually get up. I decided to leave Rostok and go to Garbage to grab a load of used weapons to sell to Barkeep. Upon my return and as I approached the Duty checkpoint ( in range to make Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov go on-line ) I got the prompt that my task had been completed. Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov was dead. I went to the Cordon and Sidorovich gave me a Mica artifact as my reward.
I quickly did the three generic assassin jobs again to see if the next fourth one would appear. It did. "Kill Father Diodor". At this point in the Game I had not yet done the Agroprom Underground ( bypassed to get the Military Documents by direct surface route ) the Dark Valley, the Wild Territory or Yantar. The Game however is telling me to kill Father Diodor in the Army Warehouses. To do so would seriously screw up so many things. That will come much later when I am ready to do all the other events in the entire level.
