If you are determined to do this thing as slowly and carefully as possible why, when you got to the bar with loot, didn't you stash it until you could sell to he who pays most - eastern bloc weaponry to Petrenko, NATO stuff to Skinflint?

I find that monetary needs can be fulfilled by selling shotguns, MP5s, pistols (basically bandit gear) and any excess of meds, food, etc.

The glut of AK weaponry from taking out the Agroprom military will fetch easily more than twice as much from Petrenko as it will from Barkeep.

Actually I have 5 Stashes in Rostok and I have stored away all the NATO
weapons. Other than used weapons and excess 9 X 18 ammo sold to
Barkeep, I have stored all the other supplies. I have about 350,000
rubles since I have NEVER bought a single item from Sidorovich
or Barkeep. I did visit Col. Petrenko & bought 2,400 rounds
of PAB-9 which remains my only purchase in the Game.

I'll tell you what Tejas...... It's looking more and more to me like I should just dump my first {apparently very flawed} attempt at SoC, and start anew with a more long term strategic approach. Through this, and other posts, I've realized that the trigger happy methodology I found so successful{?} in CoP, simply isn't the appropriate path in SoC.

I suspect that I've already hamstrung the current game, simply with too much gunplay {have I not cited my own tendency towards unnecessary/unprofitable firefights?}, the flow on effect of which is a game where I feel on a treadmill of "shoot bandits, take their stuff, sell to someone, just so that I can press on in Cordon and Garbage. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to follow through in Agroprom or Rostok, simply because I always seem to be clearing junk from my current stashes to sell for a little more money, and not getting ahead.

The fact that I seem to be burning through suits at an alarming rate is especially worrying. Several that I'm thinking you're still holding on to, I've already used up and discarded. My approach to this aspect of the game alone is far too casual.

This ain't CoP, it's not freeplay, and there's no Yar to fix my screw ups for free.

Fortunately {or not}, It's still going to be a while before I've some time up my sleeve to actually sit down and play some more. I'll continue to follow everyone's exploits here, cruise for advice, and live vicariously through your account of this game.

The up side is, if I restart, at least I've a bit of a clue what I'm up against, early in the game.

And I'll remember that I'm after TENTACLES

I've still not gone to the ZSG.......

ATV, you don't really have to worry about breaking the main quest by killing the "wrong" person. People like Fox, Bes, etc. will just drop their PDAs with info if they die before you talk to them. The traders are invulnerable and in places you can't take weapons. At worst you'll piss off a squad of loners, or make Duty or Freedom want to shoot you on sight.

I've only been in 4 Levels: Cordon, Garbage, Agroprom & Rostok.
Just activated this Stash in Rostok. One of the best in the Game:

AtV~

I feel like I'm being a bad influence on you. The way you have played
is the way most people play including myself when I first started out.
I remember having to buy shotgun ammo from both Sid and Barkeep
because there wasn't enough in the Game. I thought the shotgun was
the only effective weapon against mutants. I remember actually having
to avoid some fights with Bandits because I didn't have the ammo and
couldn't afford to buy any. For some reason I thought I had to have a
Stalker Suit right away and sold all the Leather & Bandit Jackets I had
found to scrape the money together. What I didn't realize is that Sid or
Barkeep didn't really pay squat for them and they were far more valuable
to wear than anything I could get for them. My current Game is the first
I have taken all I learned from all 3 Games and really applied it to take
my time really slow, use the resources the Game gives me and not buy
things I really don't need. Almost 2 months in and I'm still wearing the
Bandit Jacket I wore on my 4th trip to the Agroprom. I just got back from
my 7th trip. Play however you want to have fun and not to try to imitate
me since from what you said you have little time and like me you need to
go through it at least once before you decide to apply all the lessons learned.

Mystery of the Agroprom Underground ( Part 2 )

With all the yelling and gunfire above I knew the Bandits had
suddenly faced some Military Soldiers that had just appeared.
I certainly wasn't going to get in between them so I waited:
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8995/a4ts.jpg

I checked my PDA knowing that the red tint added to a person
meant that they had just expired. You can see how the first Lt.
Petrenko was dead while the second Lt. Petrenko was still alive.
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/1189/tw0w.jpg

Soon enough there were only two left. I waited for them to move
around but it was quiet. Soon there was one crying for help. I
realized they were wounded. This situation had turned out well:
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4039/89f3.jpg

When I had first arrived on the scene I had shot the lower level Bandit
guard and then some coming down the stairs. While I had waited for them
to come to me, my 6th sense or Zone sense knew to always be careful of
what comes behind you. Sure enough a Bandit had tried to sneak up on
me and I had turned around and shot him. You can see him behind me
on the Mini-Map. As I got closer to the spiral stairs I noticed one of the
Soldiers wounded on the steps and I shot him from here. My Mini-Map
said 1 was left. There was going to be a lot of Loot from this shoot-out.
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/4231/z06r.jpg

I noticed an Obokan on the ground and thought that the Military Soldiers
were of higher rank to have that weapon. I picked it up and then suddenly
realized that something extraordinary had just happened. Something that
I had only heard about but it had never happened to me in the Agroprom:
http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/2968/hqi4.jpg

I had killed him coming down the stairs not realizing who he was. Never
before had I ever met him in the Agroprom. He was always found in the
Dark Valley and the only other exception is when I had joined the Freedom
Faction before going to the Dark Valley and he appeared in the Wild Territory:
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/3103/58kt.jpg

I found the last survivor on the stairs and shot him. There was a lot more
loot to recover. I went from body to body loading up on all the supplies:
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/4135/3yha.jpg

I used the body of the dead Stalker ( permabody ) to stash all the excess
knowing that all the other bodies would disappear. I took the best stuff
remembering that I had already taken a load all the way to the other end:
http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/3102/blq4.jpg

This had been one hell of a fight. I was lucky that the Military had
appeared behind the Bandits as I was beneath them trapping them:
http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/8999/0s84.jpg

Unlike all the Trenchcoat Bandits before with NATO weapons, this
second group was ordinary bandits with the exception of 2 Trenchcoats:
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4642/ncw2.jpg

I went through the underground the long way coming back up the stairs
to see the Endurance Artifacts I still could not safely recover. I would need
a couple of Battery Artifacts later in the Game before I would be able to go:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7763/p7r8.jpg

I found the rest of the Soldiers waiting for me at the other spiral stairs:
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/6710/gxgt.jpg

I loaded up on my earlier loot as much as I could and prepared to leave:
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6485/bx0v.jpg

I left out the east gate and took the long road out to approach the other
Agroprom complex from the east since the west entance had too many
Bandits waiting there. This path was the best way to keep the Stalkers
here alive. They needed to survive to complete one of my PDA missions:
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7489/oh7c.jpg

I made a sprint load of my best loot to depart from the Agroprom level:
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7133/37ic.jpg

Of course Bandits, Military and Mutants made me fight my way out of there:
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/840/3vl1.jpg

And there you have it. How I came across an object that I did not expect
and an NPC that I did not expect that was carrying it. I think because in
the past I had not made a 2nd trip to the Agroprom Underground before
going into the Dark Valley is why Friar and Poker were always there for me.
The way I did things this time with delaying going to the Dark Valley and
waiting for a 2nd spawn in the underground is how I produced just the
right conditions for getting Friar in the Agroprom. This should explain
why a few others have too but never before for me until this Game now.

What a happy ending to my story about
the mystery of the Agroprom Underground.

+1 to this. I've only ever played through STALKER the one single way (and I've played it through quite a few times) - that is, going from a to b, wherever the game tells me to go, shooting everything that moves on the way. I've not ever regretted playing it differently - if I want to see how else the game can play out, I come here to read about it on the forums.

The important thing about STALKER is that it is open ended - you actually have a choice in how you play it. If you want to play like TS does, then you can. If you want to play like I did (simple a to b, as quickly through the game as I could), then you can. If you want to go straight from Cordon to one of the later levels, without screwing around for gear in Garbage/Agroprom/DV/whatever in-between, than go for it (you will more than likely get killed, but the important bit is that the game will allow you to do it if you want to try).

So, play the game how you want to play. If you want to play it a different way later, then you can simply start a new game after you complete your current one (with the benefit of the additional knowledge you have about the game world from completing your current game).

Thanks for your responses to my dilemma, fellow STALKERS.
I shall {when time allows} continue with my original game. I think I'm just frustrated because the many examples of play I've seen referred to here, suggest to me that my approach is needlessly very wasteful.

I think what I'll try to do, is play through, whilst treating the whole game as an exercise in what I've elsewhere referred to as "reconnaissance by death". That is, of necessity, I keep sticking my head into places and, expecting to get it shot off, determine the best course of action.

CoP taught me the value of an approach that occasionally saw me hard saving on a nearly minute by minute basis. By this, I can at least determine what I should not be doing........

Maybe, some advice from me along the lines of "well you really shouldn't do it that way because, if you do......" {speaking as the guinea pig who actually tried "it"} might also be of use to others?

As long as I don't throw out too many spoilers.....
