I generally find the vanilla game too easy. Even on Master difficulty.
I think after playing the different mods, where the weapons do more damage, it can somewhat spoil the vanilla game.

That being said, I am thinking about following in the footsteps of Tejas, and
do a slow vanilla play-through of the game.

Shadow of Chernobyl - Patch 1.0005

Last night I returned to the Cordon. Previously the three military on the road
have been attacking the Rookie Village and the others followed. This seems
to happen a lot with the 1.0005 Patch. At the Rookie Village I looked on
down the hill and saw the 3 road sentries walking slowly all the way by
their blockade. I then decided to hit the Car Park with the 3 Loners.
When I did that and gathered my loot I was headed back to the
Rookie Village and I heard gunfire. I arrived to mass murder.
Most all the Loners were dead except one near the rear.
I killed a couple of soldiers but more were left and
I found them in Sid's bunker. When I looked
around the corner one saw me. I had to
draw him out so my weapon would
appear. The last one was inside
with Sid behind the closed
door. This is bad. I am
going back to a Save
before all this.

Thanks for posting this one Tejas. If I think I recognize these events occuring in my game, I'll be careful visiting Sid.

Sounds like the times I've found everyone hostile inside Yanov.....

Tejas,
Reading this inspired me to start my own (almost) vanilla play through. I'm still using graphics and sound mods. Annnd I'm still using a repair mod. I just like to have a trusted weapon that I can keep repairing and use, rather than going through guns like disposable razors. But that's it. No ZRP, bug fixes, or anything.

I have a question though. At what point did you accept Sid's special mission? Does it affect spawns in the Cordon?
So far I've been holding off on taking his mission, and the Cordon has been extremely quiet.

I hit the military early on, and after one respawn at the guard post that netted me three Abakans, they haven't been back. Same with the bridge soldiers. The alarmed shouts from the guard post megaphone have been getting a bit grating, too.

About six bandits show up per day, with four of them filtering in from the north, and the other two falling victim to the NPC spawn-inside-the-campfire bug.

So after a few days of gathering all the Cordon loot, it seems that all I have left to do each day is gather a few supplies from a handful of bandits, hunt a small handful of mutant respawns, and obsessively stack the mounting corpses into neat piles.

Is that about right? Will more happen if I accept Sid's mission?

That is probably because you shot someone too close to the station, or one of your shots actually hit the station. Happens with Skadovsk, too. They lock down and everyone aboard is your enemy - just take a walk for a while and they should have calmed down by the time you get back.

I try to find other kinds of challenges than the ones the game missions offer. CS is especially well suited for such antics, a good example from SoC might be making the Bandits neutral.

Another (maybe obvious) idea for vanilla is to not use artifacts at all (except perhaps for stamina, otherwise the game would become too tedious). That way you need more bandages, antirads and medkits, and your suits can't be repaired.

Yet another idea is to stay away from scoped weapons, and only use those with iron sights.

Shadow of Chernobyl - Patch 1.0005

Darkh4~

I waited until a month had passed to take Sid's job outside the Cordon.
For this reason I believe I got no respawns of the Military in the Cordon
until I had left for Garbage and came back. Now in the Cordon in all my
many return trips, the Military keeps getting agitated by the Boars near
the road and have ended up attacking the Rookie Village 4 or 5 times now.
Just like in the Agroprom, if you shoot the Cordon Speaker it will go quiet.

Currently I have returned to the Agroprom to do the Underground for the
first time in this Game. Much easier to manage all the Loot when you don't
have to come out to a full Military Base this time. I emptied the Base again
so that I can come out to an empty Base prior to going down under this trip.

I think that it must be leaving the Cordon that reinstates the Military respawns, because I finally decided to accept Sid's special mission after five days, still without leaving the Cordon, just to see what would happen.

The Military still doesn't respawn, and the Bandit spawns inside the autopark also seem to end. However, the rate at which new Bandits enter into the area from the northern checkpoint seems to increase.

The only other changes I've noticed is the arrival of the three random stalkers that hang out at the pig farm, and of course, Fox shows up at the old church.

Since they haven't respawned, I haven't had an issue with the Military attacking the Rookie Village yet, but I have been losing rookies to mysterious, unexplained deaths. No gunfire, no mutant roars, but when I return I'll find a random rookie either dead or injured in the middle of the road across from the campfire.

I also lost Fox, just minutes after meeting with him, under similar circumstances. I'm guessing this is a bug that most mods fix because I haven't seen it a long time. It's like they touched that spider web anomaly from Roadside Picnic and later dropped dead of a heart attack.

And finally, did you find that many Bandits carried MP5s? You said that you were using an MP5/Viper to conserve 5.45 ammo, but so far I'm finding 9x19 ammo to be just as scarce, if not more so. I'm pretty much having to stick with the Makarov or the Fort-15 in order to have a steady supply of ammo that I don't have to purchase.

Darkh4~

There shouldn't be any Bandit respawns in the Car Park. What you should
get is Bandits traveling there from the Cordon exit to Garbage. If you are
out of range their travel will take place but be off-line. As you travel to go
up there, as they get in your range they should go from off-line to on-line
and you can fight them all over the Cordon as you choose. The more that
you travel around the more variety you will receive. This also goes for the
Military respawns who, although they have a different path of travel than
the Bandits and Loners, they too must travel from north to south. Once
the Bandits get to the Car Park and you come in range and they go on-line
some will die in the old campfire spawn glitch. The Loners are a slightly
different story. As you get in range and they become on-line they will
spawn in a mass group. The larger the group, the better chances two
or more NPCs will have a collision or impact against each other ( read:
occupy the same space ) and the result is that one will spawn dead so
to speak. Off-line and On-line actions are in the control of the Player.

My Fox died rather quickly by Bandits. The dogs can also sneak up on
him even after when you think you killed the last one. Most important
NPCs like Yurik, Bes, Mole and many others easily die after their scene
in the Player's stage. I did not get the 3 Loners at the Pig Farm and Fox
until I took Sid's mission and I had returned from Garbage. I also had
a big change in Mutant locations and the 3 Pseudodogs were added at
the area just south of the exit to Garbage. Additionally I always had 2
Bandits spawn at the Cordon exit until I went to Rostok where this now
changed to Loners being in control of that with 5 or so men. The other
change is now Dogs come out of the checkpoint that didn't happen before.

Yes, I had shortages of 9 X 19. I would not use automatic fire and I never
wasted this ammo on mutants. The Makarov pistol was used in shooting
Mutants and close range NPC battles as much as possible. If you get some
practice you will find it is better than expected. You can also shoot a
whole magazine rapid fire with good results. The shotgun is useful but
once I left the Cordon I'm not really using it at all. The AKS-74U has
become my primary weapon to replace the shotgun and when I fight
NPCs at longer ranges I am using the AKM as single shot scopeless.
Once I go to the Dark Valley I will get a Scope there if all goes well.

I've now been in the Zone about 6 weeks and I'm on my 3rd armor
which is down to 4%. My first Armor ( Leather Jacket was replaced
at 1%. My 2nd armor was a Bandit Jacket. My 3rd that I wore to
the Agroprom ( now on my 2nd trip there ) is also a Bandit Jacket.
This is my Loot after just coming up from the Agroprom Underground
on the right and on the left is a typical loadout I'm using except for
the PB-1 Pistol that I just picked up from a dead Loner and not using:
