My fears are based more on the state of the industry as a whole rather than only GSC. A culture of releasing unfinished games in order to patch them in the future via a "roadmap" but still manage to have a perfectly working ingame store is just an insult to your customers.

GSC also shot itself in the foot with that whole NFT debacle. This is typical AAA publisher behaviour. Try to coax your fans into some shady shit, get called out, backpedal using the "we're listening to our community" crap. This is EA level crap.

It has been said that you can do 10 good things but if you do 1 bad thing, people will remember you for the 1 bad and forget about all the good.

Likewise, that applies to GSC Game World. After giving us three great Games in 2007, 2008 and 2009, people can only think about Stalker 2 being cancelled in 2012. The trust the fanbase had was broken, for many people due to this action. People can get more upset over what they can't have than giving consideration to what they already have.

Like anyone else I wanted Stalker 2 back when it was supposed to be released in 2012. However, my expectation was for a quality product. It has been well documented that Sergiy Grygorovych was unhappy with what the Stalker 2 Devs were creating/producing. Keep in mind the 2008 crash in the world markets and jobs were lost all over the world. Yet SG kept GSC Game World alive and employed all these workers for several years beyond 2008.

After producing 3 Games in quick succession, suddenly it was taking years ( 2009-2012 ) without adequate results. It is said that the Devs had come up with a storyline that was nothing more than a repeat of the Faction Wars ( Clear Sky ) that was the least successful of the 3 Games. This did not impress SG and it's not what he wanted. SG wanted something more like SoC ( Shadow of Chernobyl ) that was a lone person in a storyline of exploration and discovery.

If SG cancelled the work of the Stalker 2 Devs, then it was a more complex situation than most people may realize. He was unhappy with their progress. He was unhappy with paying them salaries for several years without adequate results ( compared to the other 3 Games ) during a ruined economic world after 2008. But most of all I think SG was just exhausted.

Keep in mind he created GSC Game World as a 15-year-old teenager, and at 16 years old, employed 15 people. This is a young boy that worked and worked, producing many Games, all the way into being a man and had never taken a break. By 2012, He was 27 years old and had never done anything but run GSC Game World since a teenager. I believe he decided to shutdown GSC Game World after stopping the work on Stalker 2 and letting everyone go, to simply go out in the world and see what was beyond the life of a Game developer stuck in an office for over a decade.

You may or may not know, that he took up motorcycle racing and got good enough that he was hired by a professional motorcycle racing team in Germany. He did this for many years and got several awards and was truly living a life he had never been able to do before. In all this time, the Stalker Community did not dwindle and go away. It grew and grew, through Mods and his decision to release the tools so ordinary Players around the world could modify and enhance the Stalker Games.

At the end of 2014, SG allowed GSC Game World to be re-opened and his younger brother Evgeniy became CEO and was given the task of announcing and releasing a sequel to the Cossacks Games. Cossacks 3 was released in 2016. Proving himself to his older brother, Evgeniy was next given the most important job ever as it was announced in 2018, he was working on Stalker 2. And that is where we are today, just a few months away from its release in 2022.

So sure, I was disappointed Stalker 2 got cancelled a decade ago like many people. If GSC Game World had been greedy and just cared about money, we would have seen low quality, yearly releases like Call of Duty. We would be on Stalker 12 now. Instead, Sergiy Grygorovych did not sell the franchise and did not release any quick money-grabbing titles for the Stalker Games, because he loved the franchise and had the highest standards and expectations for its future.

This is all my take and observations on what has happened in the past decade.

Opinions may vary.

Regardless, with Stalker 2 coming up in just a few months, I doubt the Stalker Community will be playing Anomaly or any of these other Stalker Mods much longer. It's going to be great to get back into the Zone with something of the likes we have never seen before with UE5.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath for that for now. I've seen way too many titles released in pre-alpha state lately, so I'll just wait for the first patches to get out and then see if I'll get the game. I'm not going to pay for an unfinished mess and hope modders will fix what the devs didn't care about.

As sentimental as I may be towards Stalker, I don't really trust any developers these days, and GSC don't have a spotless track record either.

The only game I preorder each year is Football Manager.

Yeah, Anomaly is definitely an acquired taste. In its vanilla form it is rather tedious, but with mods and tweaking I found a sweet spot where the game was challenging and enjoyable.

The looting system doesn't make much sense in its original form, all weapons and armour are ruined when you pick them up. Why? How do these guys survive in the Zone with junk guns? Nonsense. Also much other stuff, I can understand that.

Well, that certainly makes more sense a year and a half later from my last attempt, that people have added a wide variety of Mods to remove dumb things, change worn out items and the ability to make more money. I forgot to mention that when I asked many of my friends how they were able to enjoy Anomaly, most of them admitted they were cheating. The usual stuff like giving themselves massive amounts of money to buy those medkits and bandages when they get scratched or antirads when they walk on grass that is radioactive and would normally kill a new Player.

My point to them was a Mod should be something enjoyable and not needing cheats to make it worthy. Incredible hardship and economy difficulties are what added Mods are for, not the base Mod as is. I guess that's where the slider bars came into play later. Sadly, when that did happen, the Game was filled with too many junk items.

Luckily for me, shortly after I went back to Call of Chernobyl with added Mods, I got an offer to join Testing for an unreleased Stalker Mod. Now that was exciting and beyond fantastic what I saw and did. However, the version that I liked which needed small improvements was taken over by a team of Russian Modders and they ruined it. Not sure about the current status but I hope it is doing okay. I still have my copies of that unreleased Mod that I won't name.

Regardless, with Stalker 2 coming up in just a few months, I doubt the Stalker Community will be playing Anomaly or any of these other Stalker Mods much longer. It's going to be great to get back into the Zone with something of the likes we have never seen before with UE5.

I'm happy to hear you are enjoying Anomaly. It's been the most popular Stalker Mod for the last couple of years. The majority of people who try it, love it and have added many mods to enhance their experience. However, in my case, after trying it several times, it just wasn't for me.

If you are interested in my experience, I have provided three links to comments I have made about those attempts so you can read them if you would like:

Pretty much the last straw, that I apparently didn't go into detail here on the GSC Forums, but I did on the Facebook Stalker groups, involved a scenario I will describe briefly.

I was a Loner and was in the Cordon. My armor and weapons were nothing to brag about. I was doing my best just to stay alive, with limited money to deal with the side effects of combat or mutant attacks. I remember arriving at the Loner Base ( where the Repair Tech was ) and just as I got to the main buildings we were suddenly under attack. There was little I could do but just try to avoid being killed.

After it was briefly over, I thought I needed to grab any loot I could and go inside. I went over to a dead NPC and checked the inventory. It was a massive amount. Before I could decide what to do next, I heard gunfire again and it was getting closer. I needed to hurry so I clicked to take it all at once. Suddenly I couldn't move because I had just taken on 70kg of junk. In a panic I dropped a few looted weapons so I could move and then I ran inside.

Running to the back of the building where there was an empty stash, I started sorting all the junk gun parts and junk weapons parts that I knew I would need later. Then as I was looking at the huge amount of totally useless items like wet underwear, porn magazines, damaged ammo and other stuff, I noticed my health was dropping. Why?

I gave myself a bandage and then a medkit, thinking I must have taken a stray bullet or something in the firefight. Going back to my inventory I once again was dropping useless items as I needed to reduce my weight. Then I noticed my health was still dropping. What was going on? Something was giving me radiation poisoning and I did not see what.

Eventually I figured out it must be an artifact I grabbed. I can't remember but it didn't seem like I could remove it. Or if I did, regardless I still have the radiation poisoning and my health was rapidly decreasing. Vodka, anti-rads, bandages and medkits could not stop my decline and soon I was dead, not having any other resources or money to save my life.

I discovered later, it was indeed the artifact and apparently you have to buy or find specialized artifact containers to safely put them in just for carrying them on you and you have to another type of specialized artifact container to wear them on your belt. That was it. I never went back in disgust. Way, way too much junk and useless items. There was no joy in this for me. I did not want a Game focused on inventory management more so than exploration and combat.

I had plenty of friends that were thrilled beyond words to go all over the Zone and find every single piece of needed items required for armor or weapon upgrades. To them, being able to rent a workbench and do all the needed or rare upgrades themselves rather than pay someone to do it, was like an orgasm. The upgrade paths I had seen were crude compared to other Mods. I was not impressed.

What did impress me were a few tiny features that Anomaly had that I had not seen before. I discovered that if I went back to Call of Chernobyl ( that I had always played and enjoyed without additional Mods ) that I could find and add all the little Mods that made my new Game fresh and different. So that's my experience.

☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️

Thanks for the kind words about thinking of me and the good times we had so long ago. It was really entertaining and never a dull moment when you were a Moderator here and things were a lot more active after GSC had just released three Games. Hopefully you will continue to drop by and tell us what you are up to.

Alright then.

Next time I will lookup the Rouble - Euro exchange for a better accurate roleplaying.

Edit: My country is in another hard lockdown, starting tomorrow.
