Nice that someones taken the time to clue people up onto how to maintain their pc's but im confused on one part.

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Usually you enter that into the command prompt when you want to fix your prefetch folder if youve damaged it due to deleting everything inside that folder (it will rebuild 2 files).

You should probably call it part 10 (after the defrag part) and teach people how to prefetch boot only, its definately not a command i would recommend using for a normal defrag.

Further notes on killing explorer.exe...

The process should be "killed" in a manner different to what I described in the main post. Here is a clean way of disabling the service:

1) Go to the Start menu and select “Shut Down”.

2) Hold down CTRL, ALT, and SHIFT, and then click the Cancel button on the window. YOU MUST BE HOLDING DOWN CTRL, ALT, SHIFT WHEN CLICKING THE BUTTON! This will cleanly terminate exploer.exe.

3) When you need to start S.T.A.L.K.E.R., you will do so from a shortcut. Just bring up Task Manager by pressing CTRL, ALT and DEL, and navigate to "File" --> "New Task (Run...)", then click "Browse..." and navigate to your S.T.A.L.K.E.R. shortcut. Then click OK and the game should run.

4) When you quit the game, bring up Task Manager again and write "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) into "New Task (Run...)", and click OK. That should do it.

* Purchase more RAM. I know, I know; This is not something you want to hear, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a serious memory-hog. The game is playable on 1Gb, but it really requires at least 2Gb for smooth and enjoyable gameplay. Note that this step is a non-essential one, but a strongly recommended one nevertheless.
---END QUOTATION---

This is the only solution for stutter, especially for 1.04 patch. With 1GB of RAM under Windows XP it takes me five minutes to load any level and next five minutes to load the rest of the level and stop stutter. My hard drive LED is continuously flashing all the time. I thought at first that CPU or video card are not up to the task but then I remembered playing Amiga games 15 years ago when similar wild non-stop floppy drive access happened. Doubling RAM then solved the problem so I decided to do the same thing. Adding 1GB of RAM to total of 2GB of RAM solved the problem. Levels load in less than a minute and stutter is gone for good.

My suggestion is that you people at GSC stop pretending that STALKER can run properly on 1GB of RAM and admit that 2GB of RAM is mandatory, at least for patch 1.04 that severely aggravated stuttering problem and increased loading times. For your next game STALKER: Clear Skies I suggest better optimization of textures because if you do not address this problem now not even 4GB of RAM under Vista will be enough to run the game smoothly.

hi i'm just a beginner (know almost nothing about computers), and i just want to say THANK you , before i had to use static lightning and it still lagged and stutter, but now i can use dynamic... and it runs like a "cat chased by a dog" i can get around 30 - 60 Frames per second i'm sooooo happy happy happy... o just for info i have Intel 6300 @ 1.86 , GeForce 7600GT , 2x1GBCorsair DDR2 667, ...little below recommended if i'm right? anyway THANK YOU , now i'm going to get me "some" coffee

o yes and i use the no-cd crack now (i have the original) and just want to ask you if it help in any way?
---END QUOTATION---

I'm glad the guide worked for you. If it really did have the influence you claim it had, it's likely that you were running quite a lot of unnecessary stuff you didn't need hogging up your resources. I highly doubt that a no-CD crack would do anything for performance though...

By the way, here is the new DirectX November link. The one posted a few posts above is no longer up-to-date.

EDIT: Here's the link to the latest version of CCleaner as well.

Hey shadowcut what is this? (OpenAl)
---END QUOTATION---

OpenAL is a cross-platform 3D audio API appropriate for use with gaming applications and many other types of audio applications. It's S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s core audio files. Updating them from the original version that comes with the game to the newest should improve performance (ref Decane who started this thread).

Why restart Explorer.exe? Just kill it!

---QUOTATION---
A Guide To Help Eliminate Stutter!
* Restart explorer.exe prior to launching S.T.A.L.K.E.R., in order to free up precious memory.
---END QUOTATION---

If you close down Explorer, why not just start Stalker from the command-line in stead of restarting Explorer??? Stalker runs fine without the Windows Graphical Shell (on XP sp2) and that'll save even more precious memory.
