Maybe I've not red it accurately but still I can't undestand why developers quitted GSC, what happened between dev and SG lately, why still no official word by him about it.
First, Sergey abruptly closed STALKER for undisclosed reasons. The developers then went to look for an alternative sponsor and met Vostok Ventures. They then tried to negotiate with Sergey to keep the STALKER brand, but did not succeed. Consequently, they decided to keep working in a similar post-apocalyptic setting, but with a different back story and under the tentative title "Survarium".

Thanks for the summary. It seems to me this affaire has some bliind spots I can't sort out, firstly SG closing the studio without reason, apparently.
So goes the world, however. I just wonder how profitable is to own the rights for one of the most appreciated franchise in the story of videogames and keeping it in a drawer.

I don't want to really start a console war or anything, but let's face it, it's not really Sergey's or anyone's fault. PC game industry has been going downhill alot lately, and it's all due to the PC market being overshadowed by the agressive and I'd even say, malignant console market. It kind of makes sense, that releasing S2 means taking alot of risk, especially since the game is not based inside US or EU and publishing will be alot weaker there, as opposed to the "local" overhyped games and all the neurosis behind them. Consoles have greatly hampered the PC gaming industry: look at all the bad console ports the PC games have now become. PC games are altogether in the danger zone now. It's not very surprising S2 got cancelled. Maybe I'm overexagerrating abit, but I think that in part at least it's the way it is now.

What makes you think PC game industry has been going downhill? Steam sales doubled in 2011. Tons of great games are coming out.

It just seems to me that way. Alot of PC games have become dumbed down and linear lately. I don't see alot of creativity and originality in them. It's like they've become mainstreamed with cutscenes and all that CoD linearity. Rage was a big disappointment, for example. Such great developers and such a big letdown.

I agree with Kane4 and even though sales are good on the PC overall, the games are mostly full of hand-holding for the kids. I remember when first jumping into Stalker, you could go different directions. Modern easy games are strictly linear. Most are also third-person with aim-assist.
They are made for 14 year olds and the console...not for the thinking mans PC.
rant/over but I'm depressed...

can someone please punch me in the face and tell me that I'm still dreaming?

why are there rumors going about that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. brand has been sold to Bethesda?

:edit

reading through the comments, it has been confirmed to be a fake rumor

Then there's Skyrim. Not perfect but total freedom of movement, no linearity etc. One has to make *good* games, period.

It's like authors whining over the decline of the book market because they ran out of ideas and fail to deliver books that attract enough interest.

It might have worked out reasonably well for Bethesda to develop STALKER 2. After all, it is famous for both bugs and extensive mod communities — both things dear to our hearts.

Well this is certainly sad news. Why would Sergey refuse to sell the series to Vostok Games if he won't do anything with it himself?

I knew it was only a matter of time before the GSC dev team moved on to another project. They have to make a living, after all. I wish them the best of luck, though I have little interest in a free-to-play online multiplayer game.

It's really a shame, because I feel like the Stalker formula hasn't quite been perfected yet, and that Stalker 2 was a good chance to reach that goal.

SoC has the best atmosphere, but it's missing some game play mechanics, and let's face it, it's graphics are a little dated at this point. CS gave up some of the atmosphere and A-Life unpredictability for the Faction Wars. Still a good game, but less to do in free play unless you feel like picking a fight with a faction. And finally there's CoP, which has great visuals and game play, but still lacks SoC's atmosphere and randomness in free play.

For Stalker 2 I had been hoping for CoP's game play with SoC's atmosphere, combined with a wide open A-Life and plenty to do in free play. Now it sounds like we'll never know if this would have been achieved. All my hopes now are on Lost Alpha.

As for Bethesda, they would need to do some serious retooling regarding how they handle A.I. before they could do a proper Stalker game. I've been playing the heck out of Skyrim lately, and while I am enjoying it, their game world just doesn't feel as real and organic as the Zone.

guys picture this

1) Bethesda gets the rights, right. their actual developed games aside, they're a good publisher in that they never interfere in a game's development cycle and generally let the developers do what they want, for better or for worse. this gives us stuff like Rogue Warrior, but also gives us stuff like New Vegas and Dishonored.

2) Bethesda's already developing two massive open-world franchises full-time, and Vostok is already like halfway done with STALKER 2, so Bethesda gets them on board to finish it up.

3) THQ has been teetering on the brink of collapse lately, so by some weird twist of fate they die. 4A, seeing that Sergey is no longer an element in STALKER's development, teams up with Vostok to work on STALKER 2.
