S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl should utilize your dual and quad core processor natively and automatically. Running a dual or quad core processor is one of the best ways to improve performance.

The above is a quote from GSC’s readme file. However, based on my observation of the performance monitor on my G15 keyboard while playing the game; only one core of my 3GHz Pentium D processor was being used to its full potential - and was maxed out for much of the game - while the other core was barely above idle.

Note the use of ‘was’ in my description of the situation. I’m pleased to inform you that I have found a solution that has greatly increased the game’s performance - on my system at least - and could have the same effect on your system Furthermore, this solution should also work for you Windows Vista users out there.

1. Go to http://www.nHancer.com download and install this utility, which gives you access to the advanced properties of your video card. I’m running a Geforce 7950GT on Windows XP, but it also supports the 8800 series and Vista.

2. Then create a profile for Stalker, and click first on the ‘compatibility’ tab on the right hand side; tick the checkbox for ’CPU Multicore Support’ at the bottom of the list of functions, then click on Multicore. This function was designed to add multi core support to older games which do not support it natively.

3. The profile you just created must be activated manually to use it in Direct3D games like Stalker, so you must highlight it in the list of profiles, and tick the ‘can be activated manually’ box

4. To activate the profile, at the top of the screen select: Tools/Activate Profile, and then click on the Stalker profile you just created.

5. Minimise nHancer and launch the game. You need to have the program running each time you play to provide this enhanced performance.

I was disappointed with Stalkers performance with my card after I installed the game, and like many others had to use the ‘tweaked’ (downgraded) user.ltx file which is circulating on the net to get a decent frame rate.

After creating and applying this profile, apart from a brief initial frame rate drop directly after loading a level; the performance for the rest of the game has been solid even with all the detail sliders maxed out and dynamic lighting switched on. The game still maintains a good frame rate during lightning storms, which have been the bane of many players.

The CPU usage looks more balanced, and this increased performance seems to allow it to process information in memory faster too, so it should eliminate the ‘memory leak’ problem reported on these forums.

5b)) CPU Dual Core Fix - AMD & Intel.
[link]http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=60416[/link]

This is a great HOT FIX from Microsoft, it works to 100% on my machine and i highly recommend this before any other "CPU Dual Core Fix".

"registry tweak"? Details?

I've done the "no prefetch" fix and that added perhaps another 5 minutes of trying to play this game before it crashes (from 5 minutes before) BUT I've read several referances here to a "registry tweak" yet havent yet found details explaining exactly HOW one does this (and yes, I've done a search and viewed the tweak guide too, still not seeing it).

Can someone please either explain how one does this in detail or provide a link (preferably not to a 25 page thread where I've seen it mentioned).

Thanks in advance

Oh yeah.....I DO have an ATI card so perhaps I'll just need to be patient but I'll try the registry tweak and see if that helps.

The game looks, runs great on my PC, default settings besides the "no-prefetch" for ~ 10 minutes (now) until it'll freeze, then the screen goes black. Only a reboot gets me back.

6) Game does not start after installing the patch

Taken from the knowledge base post, may be of some help.

The game does not start up after installing the patch.

Cause: the patch comes with the most recent version of OpenAL, to make EAX work correctly.

Solution: install the latest audio drivers or go to the folder windows/system32/ and remove the old version of the library ct_oal.dll (Creative) or nv_openal.dll (nForce2).

Skybox Hall of Mirrors Effect (Duplicating Horizon Objects)

Skybox Hall of Mirrors Effect (Duplicating Horizon Objects) - for searching

For owners of GeForce 6 series cards, I highly recommend using drivers from Guru3D.com. The nVidia drivers have not yet been updated for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on this series. In fact, nVidia hasn't upgraded their driver base for this series in years. Anyway, use the following links:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1609 Windows XP 32bit Driver
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1602 Windows XP 64bit Driver
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1611 Vista 32bit Driver
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1612 Vista 64bit Driver

Install, BE SURE TO RESTART, and enjoy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in Fullscreen mode on your GF6 Series card...

7)) Registry Tweak
[link]www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=community&s=forums&s_game_type=xr&thm_page=1&thm_id=4734&page=11&sec_id=12[/link]
(scroll down a bit)

Tutorial by Spazz:

---QUOTATION---

in winxp push start>run and type "regedit" (without the " )

click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , then "SYSTEM", then "CurrentControlSet" then "Control" , then "Session Manager" ,then the folder , "Memory Management."

look for the word "PagedPoolSize" and right click it. click "modify" under "valuedata" put in ffffffff

Right click on REG_DWORD (any of them in the middle)and NEW>DWORD Value.

a new value will show up at the bottom of your list.
right click that value and rename it PoolUsageMaximum.

after you renamed it right click it again and click Modify.
under ValueData put in 00000028 and thats it your done ..

like i said before it might not work for everyone.

Mannequins (EDIT: sorry, Spazz's) registry Tweak suggestion above helped me with the CTD's; in short, here's what I did to get a stable, bug-free game looking like it should:

1) Uninstalled the entire program, INCLUDING, (THIS IS IMPORTANT!) the Stalker folder with the .ini files in the "public" folder, (you must do this manually) NOTE: apparently deleting your saved games as well seems to be another important part of this; you can't save them somewhere and use them with the new install, otherwise there's a chance the graphics will revert. Obviously however you will lose your saved games.
2) Reinstalled and patched.
3) Opened Regedit, went into my system registry to this folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management
and changed these two values:
"PagedPoolSize"=dword:ffffffff
"PoolUsageMaximum"=dword:00000028
4) Also downloaded NVidia's "Nhancer", made a Stalker profile and enabled dual core processing

The ONLY other thing I did was download and install the 'NoHeadbob' Mod, the creator of which I would love to give a big wet sloppy kiss to... makes the game playable without the Dramamine.. Now the game looks great, runs great and I'm not afraid to progress for fear of losing everything. I even fixed the problem with the nights not getting dark!

I uninstalled the entire program first because I had tweaked and tweaked so much that it didn't resemble the same game anymore, and after reinstalling it looked 10x better, but still had the CTD's. The Registry fix seemed to have fixed that.

Vista32 fix not a 100% fix for some. Unfortunately.

I've got a brand new box, E6600, 2GB ram, 8800GTS Vista32 playing at 1920 * 1200 on a Dell 24" widescreen.Built this just to play this game and have scoured the net looking for the save game crash fixes, tried em all (I'm a programmer in the real world). On my system the enable memory fixes causes an xray engine crash on startup of the game making it unplayable. I've been sitting here for the last 3 weeks without being able to play this neat game waiting for patch2 to hit the deck. Sigh. When its going, its wonderful.
I'm waiting for the devs to fix it. (and it has been according to the patch list!)
