Turning Bloom On and Bloom Settings

So I turned on the bloom via the console and wow what a difference. My first thought was why couldn't I turn this on in the in-game settings?

No Bloom (Max graphics settings 1440x900) - [link]http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b138/Numina/NoBloom.jpg[/link]

Bloom On (Same Settings) - [link]http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b138/Numina/BloomOn.jpg[/link]

It seems a bit extreme as is. But I think with some tweaking it could be nice for those who like it. Still boggled as to why I couldn't turn this on in the game settings. Unless the developers felt it wasn't working or summin. I dunno.

My Specs
BFG Nvidia 8800 GTS 640mb
2GB Mushkin Ram
AMD Athlon 64 3200

Ok after a bit of tinkering I figured out a way to adjust it.

Use the console to turn it on with

r2_ls_bloom_fast on

Then you can use r2_ls_bloom_threshold to adjust the intensity of the bloom. Default value is 0.001 which is really bright. I found 0.100 to be a nice amount. It doesnt remove the gritty flavor of the scene but adds a nice effect to it. You can adjust it to your liking.

The higher the value the less Bloom there will be.

HDR is impressive and thats why it was left in the game, but it was turned off mainly because it doesnt fit the games atmosphere as well. The games supposed to be dark, and the light on they're HDR is excessively bright or your computer is really bright which is prob why its not an option. I'd like to see HDR but half as bright.

HDR is actually turned ON in the game and you can't turn it off. 1st pic is also rendered with it.
HDR and Bloom is two big differences )
HDR is for precision color calculation thus giving more warmer/colder colors and slightly blooming it, while bloom is kinda distort picture (or how to call it) and make bright pixels appear to be more bright than they are.

Im using an ATI Radeon 9800 XT and I used bloom and HDR in half life 2 but for some reason in stalker it doesn't even give me the option to change from static lighting, any ideas why ?

STALKER's DirectX 9 renderer does not run on that family of cards. You pretty much have to have a medium to high end X1*** or a 7*** card to play it confortably.

I believe you need Shader Model 3 to enable dynamic lighting...well look at it this way at least you dont have an 8800 and struggling with FPS like others. You should be happy your video card isnt as good and now would be a better time then ever to upgrade because the markets at an all time low price wise.

If you do upgrade think about going with Nvidia, for the price you'll do better then ATI.

No, the game isn't just for high end cards, it has a DirectX 8 render for older cards as well.

And thank you Expositus, the settings you recomended look great.
