It gives the best graphics today without being all that much slower, so it must be pretty well optimized. ^_^
---END QUOTATION---

Okay Don Reba...can you explain to me why I can run Farcry, Half Life 2, and Doom 3/Quake 4 on my 6800GT at my screen's native resolution (1680x1050) with all or most of the effects on, texture detail on maximum and AA/AF enabled, while Stalker can't run in DX9 mode on the same videocard in 1280x1024 with grass and shadows on low, no AA/AF, and all other settings on medium? I can only run the "static lighting" mode, which makes the game look worse than Quake 2.

How is it that Farcry, a game that came out in March of 04 (3 years ago) and had large open areas and lots of vegetation, as well as complex water and particle effects, can run just fine without requiring a $350-400 graphics card and still look much better than Stalker? I understand that a 6800GT isn't a great graphics card by today's standards, but I would at least expect it to perform on a DirectX 9 level in Stalker. Instead, I'm forced to either use DX8 or try and play the game while it's slowed down to a slideshow.

Any major FPS release that came out in the past 3 years looks better than Stalker - again, Doom 3, Farcry, Half-Life 2, Quake 4, Call of Duty 2. To say that Stalker delivers the "the best graphics today without being all that much slower" means that either you never played the game on anything but a top-of the line computer, or that you haven't played an FPS game in the past half-decade. It's got to be pretty embarrassing when Half-Life 2 can deliver a much smoother performance on a wider range of videocards and still have better looking enemy models, weapons, and everything else, despite the fact that it came out 2.5 years ago.

No, HDR is not a shader and it does not create a postprocessing effect. Also, it is not a lighting effectm and it does not have anything to do with bumpmapping.

HDR is high precision calculation within the rendering engine - nothing else. It cannot be turned off in STALKER, nor is there any reason to want it off.
---END QUOTATION---

Also hey Don Reba, HDR is prominently featured in the "engine" section on the game's official website (http://www.stalker-game.com/en/?page=engine):

Floating point HDR, Shader Model 3.0

So explain to me, how is it that every other game that has HDR (Farcry, HL2 for example) has an option to turn it off, yet Stalker does not? I find it really really hard to believe that a feature like that is absolutely integral to the game. I think it's more likely that the developers did not give that option to the users in the graphics control panel, because of either lack of time, skill, or inability to optimize a 3D engine to look good without HDR.

GeForce 6600 and up
Radeon X1300 and up

all other videocards is forced to use DX8 rendering. Which actually looks like DX7 with refraction effects from SM1.1
But hey! HL2 already has a hack in latest patch that makes HDR work on SM2 videocards with the same quality (and I think Far Cry with patch 1.4 too)

I have a 6800GT with 256 megabytes of vram and 1.5 gigs of system memory, and the game does not run in DX9 mode with framerates above 15 fps. There are many posts at other forums about Stalker not getting playable framerates with Nvidia's 6600 or 6800 series, as well as ATI's equivalents of those cards and lower-end 7 series cards. In other words, all gamers with cards that technically meet the recommended requirements ("3D Hardware Accelerator Card Required - 100% DirectXR 9.0c compatible 256MB ", as stated on the official site) are not able to play in DirectX 9 mode. This is not only ridiculous, it shows how little time was spent optimizing the game and how little GSC cares about the customer base

Also according to Don Reba here:

---QUOTATION---
The development of the DX8 renderer has been stopped at the end of 2003.
---END QUOTATION---

which means that anyone with a fully capable DX9 graphics card that is below 7800 will either have to play a game with graphics from 2003, or return the game to the store.

Take a look at this survey that Valve does through Steam on the hardware used by Half-Life 2 players - http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html 6600 and 6800 are in the top 5 of the video cards used, with 6600 actually being on top of the list. Why GSC decided that most of the users with DirectX 9 cards have to play a game from 2003, I have no idea.

HL2 and Far Cry not have HDR, not Deferred Rendering , not have paralax mapping an not have dinamic shadow mapping . Is another generation - game and engine- . This features a Unreal 3 and Crytek 2 engine features. Unreal 3 engine demo in year 2004 run in two 6800 ultra. The X Ray engine - dx 9 render - is a year 2004 engine, like Unreal 3 engine.

And recomended specs - game readme

nVIDIA® GeForce™ 7900/ATI Radeon® X1950 with 256 MB

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 / AMD 64 X2 4200

1.5 GB RAM
