By the same measure, increasing FOV on a 4:3 screen should be better, should it not? On the other hand, if it is traditional, then maybe STALKER should indeed follow suit.

a native support with additional vision compared to 4:3 would really be highly appreciated.

Wow...Just had the chance to play the game. And yeah, I feel really screwed over by being a person playing this on a widescreen monitor. Instead of seeing More of everything, it seems we get to look out on the world from a Smaller window than those with 4:3 Displays. To me, the game feels cramped and like I always want to zoom out. Instead of seeing the sky and birds and the tops of trees at all times, we must keep moving our head? It is ridiculous.

I am really hoping GSC does something to fix this GLARING issue with the game. I don't want to miss out just because I am playing widescreen, and it seems like that is what is happening. Its the same reason I only buy DVDs in widescreen format. And now I feel like the game is pan&scan and I am just out of luck. Not a good experience with my first GSC game, one that I looked forward to for literally YEARS.

They really need to fix this if they wanna be taken seriously ever again as game developers. The first thing i noticed when i was playing the game was that i wanted to "zoom back" the camera because it feelt so zoomed in it also feels like my character is a midget or that im crouching all the time (which im not).

Just to confirm the user “wazooda” posted a work around on the general forum section, I can’t get links to work and I am not going to try anymore so I will just paste the quote.

Widescreen Field of View problem FIXED!! Woohoo!

For those of us who love widescreen gaming, one of the geniuses over at widescreengamingforums.com solved the borked FOV settings where when running a widescreen resolution, you actually are seeing LESS and not MORE than a non-widescreen player.

Here is the original thread showing the widescreen FOV problem:

http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=577

And here is the thread where the fix can be downloaded:

It does require you run a third party application but it’s the only solution I know of so far, for me I think I will stick with 1600x1200 untill someone finds a way around this but its a good fix for anyone not minding the third party app side of it.

I bet it has a command to change FOV like in HL2. What is the FOV in Stalker, 75 or 90?

I guess, I just do not see why you should gain FOV just because the screen proportions are different. The way it is done now makes sense to me.

The way it's normally done is by increasing viewable area on the sides while your gun stays in a relatively similar position to 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning that you can see more of the game world to either side. At least that's how it's done in every FPS game that supports proper widescreen.

Thanks for the warning, I guess I'll have to go back to 4:3 aspect now which on a 20 inch widescreen does not make me happy

Agreed. Proof positive that the game was rushed out the door near the end. And that's pretty sad with a game in development more than 5 years. Guess they realized at the end how many ppl have widescreen and implemented a quick 'n dirty work-around to "support" all us widescreen owners. I had faith in these guys and pre-ordered the cols ed, but right now I am regretting it. I think they have alot to make up for in terms of patching and hope it comes soon or not many people will have any interest in any of their future projects.

That is exactly the problem, you do gain FOV by going from widescreen to fullscreen, as widescreen is basicly fullscreen with part of the view cropped off. If anything they should have just cropped a little off the top and the bottom and added more to the sides as well to make the combined vertical and horizontal FOV even regardless of resolution, but full widescreen with the same vertical and more on the horizontal is prefered.

Fortunatly the fix is easy enough to use, but hopefully a patch will solve the issue without the need for running a seprate program.
