So I got a notice from Norton about "suspicious outbound traffic" asking for permission to run something called Power Eraser.

After the restart, the .exe file for the new download of Lost Alpha I just installed is gone.

The restore point has no mention of deletions!

I am really frustrated.

If it's any help, which it probably is not, I stopped using any Norton products after a 15 min trial that I did not like the behaviour of way back in 1998.
Somehow, my comp did not feel like my own...

Just the name "Norton Power Eraser" gives me the shivers. Rather like "Homeland Security", "Patriot Act", "Affordable Care Act", etc....

Norton & McAfee are both bad, intrusive and Gamer unfriendly PC
protection software. There's simply no reason to use them, especially
if you are paying money for them when you can get better stuff for free.

I've been using Zone Alarm Firewall Protection for two decades. I did
also use Avira anti-virus for many years until Zone Alarm provided their
own anti-virus that I use now too. Both Zone Alarm products are free
even though they do have more expensive versions you can pay money
for. I haven't needed them. I've never had trouble with ANY Game using
these products but countless people have had with Norton, McAfee & AVG.

I sympathise with you.

I've done lots of computer repairs over the years and Norton is the most aggressive anti-virus software I've come across.

I've seen it do all sorts of things from deleting legitimate emails to changing firewall rules and blocking a wireless printer. As a rule, I advise customers to avoid it.

@TStalker
Thanks for the reminder inre Zone Alarm. I also had good results with that in the 2000s and clearly forgot about it.

(Many things improve with age. Memory is not usually one one these things)

I currently employ AVG FREE for infection considerations. The nagware is trivial to avoid, but they also tout a firewall addon (not free - of course)
No idea if it's any good.

I use Avira, no problems. They also have a VPN.
