Gutta-percha rifles, or skills module bug?

Whilst weeding out the mils at Agroprom, I suddenly notice that my AKM74 has lost nearly half of its useability.
I wouldn't mind if I'd been storming Wolfenstein, but I've probably cracked off 50-60 rounds with this piece... not all at the same time.

Had to switch to a highly unsuitable AK74/2U which is going the same route of rapid ageing.

Anyone else seeing this in 1.4002?
Is this a gag?

(Still no mode shift)

If the gun is the one from the "sniper to kill" mission in garbage, i think it's "scripted" so as to lessens the great advantage in early game

Agreed, if it is the gun of the 'doomed one', its wear rate is very high.

Not a bug.

Nope - it's NOT the fancy sniper rifle (which is single shot anyway, and a NICE piece), that one is hiding in a car boot in Garbage, it's the free AKm74 from the Green House nearby...

Surely THAT's not scripted to die young?

Only other thing that springs to mind is that it suffered from a nearby grenade attack (but my SSuit did NOT) which seems inconsistent.

It's still odd.

It's by design. Other AKs wear in the normal way. This one is old and rusty.

The free AK is an old rusted AK and yes it is scripted to wear very quickly. The sniper's gun is an AKM, uses 7.62x39mm ammo which you cannot buy until you reach the bar, and has a non-removable PSO-1, limiting its usefulness early on.

They've forced character progression by limiting the gear NPC's have in the early game to prevent you from becoming too powerful early on. It's actually pretty hard to get good gear. But you do have two opportunities for a good firearm in the early game:

1. Take Nimble's quest to get the 5.45x39 Groza which is in the Agropom military building on the 3rd floor. Make a beeline for it once you rescue Mole.

2. Do the Duty kill the boars quest in Garbage (about a dozen boars to kill, can do with a sawed-off), this unlocks the Bar. Head to the bar, skip killing the dogs and get to the pigs/boars/duty fight on the way to bar. Frequently the mutants will kill a Duty solder, this will yield you an AN-94 when you loot him. If they don't kill someone, reload the level until they do (in my playthrough they killed someone 1st try). You can do this before you even bother killing the Garbage sniper.

Both of these guns are worlds better than the AK74/u or MP5 you'll be stuck with otherwise. If you want upgrades Fox is the cheapest repair man. The guy in Agropom (forget his name) isn't too bad but the Duty repair man in the Bar is insanely expensive. As far as I can tell the earliest you can get a PSO-1 is when you bring the docs to the barman to save ratcatcher or whatever his name is, barman had one in inventory for me after I turned those in (but not before).

Note you'll have to give up #1 if you want to progress Nimble's quest line.

Yeah,
After my bitch out, I tumbled to the fact that it was the "AK of the doomed one." (About as funny as the papièr maché "Skat 9" in 1.3003)
Proceeded accordingly.
I was lucky enough - in that game - to get ""Percy's Storage Tank"" with a spanking 74/2, 90xBP and funding to half renovate it ... It helped.

I also tumbled that the devs don't want super-stalkers running blitzkrieg ops early on. So they made it 'more challenging' (but not impossible) to gain good stuff. I really appreciate that; a game should have serious challenges. But the Chimeras in Yantar get a bit OTT. I even had one get into the Bunker... that's just messed up..

So far, the best weapon on the board appears to be a flat trajectory Sniper Obakan. I'm pretty sure that it currently has the best sights in the game. Rare, but still available in the DV, with luck, some Military invaders seem to carry it..
