Few questions regarding weaponsand NPCs (vanilla 1.0005)

How can I make NPCs switch to weapons I want them to?

-What facilitates an NPC to drop their weapons to pickup other guns( I have no idea where to look at in the gamedata)? I know NPC's are for some reason obsessed with sawn off shotguns . Why wont NPC's drop their sawn offs for better shotguns or other guns but other NPCsdo right away( I think being the parent matters, not sure)

For example, the only way to get Petruha to drop the blasted sawn off is to see him go down, take his sawnoff give him a medkit and then drop him a better shotgun.(or any gun but he will run out of ammo if its not a shotgun) I dropped a Chaser13. Then I got a SPAS14 and dropped that-Petruah switched to spas right away..but when I try to drop a SPAS to random sawn off loners they don't want it.

As far as I think...weapon condition matters. For example when iwas trying to repair some gauss guns with bandits(drop the broken gauss gun to pistol wielding bandits, they pick it up and the game generates random amounts of ammo+repaired gun), there was also an ak74u bandit that died, and since the gauss guns were fully broken, the pistol bandit would try to pickup the ak74u instead.

-For example an NPC with a pistol that had been given an MP5 with 30 rounds(but eventually ran out of ammo) was then given an IL86 and he dropped the empty MP5 right away but when I tried dropping a loaded chaser13 the NPC didn't want it.

-Do NPC's have like ranks for weapons? (soviet tier 1, shotguns tier 2, NATO tier 3)?

-Can NPC weapons jam?
I always assumed its a player only thing, but I gave this rookie with a pistol a beat down Abakan (like the durability meter fully depleted its owner was in an anomaly) anyway...the rookie was getting attacked by dogs and he would just stand there in combat mode (I am assuming he would try to fire but it jammed but NPCs don't reload jams and he wasn't the parent of the gun and only had the 30 rounds it was loaded with). I thought the rookie was bugged or something, threw an IL86 on the ground, he swapped for it ..attacked him..sure enough the rookie dropped me.This is the one im talking about

I'd only be offering my own best guesses for most of that. But 'do NPC's weapons jam?' is one I can take a stab at.

Yes, they do. I hadn't noticed it until I watched a loner attacking the zombifieds at the sawmill in Zaton in CoP. He had a MP5 and it jammed a lot. It isn't very noticeable to begin with because they reload so quickly. But as the weapon's condition deteriorated it jammed more often and after fewer shots, so it became obvious.

I thought that, if you sell a NPC a weapon and ammo to go with it, that they would then never run out of that ammo. But on selling some NPCs a weapon and ammo, the ammo never shows up in their inventory after the trade is complete. Maybe that's why they can run out. Maybe if you sell them more than a magazine's worth they'll have some left over after loading the weapon and that will trigger whatever it is that supplies them with an infinite amount. And maybe not.

It's unfortunate, but the only way NPCs accept better guns reliably seems to be when they only have a pistol. (tested with the Complete-mod)

In terms of them picking up weapons, in Yantar I have recently seen some loner with a Spas, which he apparently picked up from a zombie. One of the more odd things I have seen in terms of equipment. Other than that it's mostly just pistol-rookies in the Cordon and Garbage, who usually have AK-74s, Abakans and L85s in my playthrough.

But I haven't tested this systematically, so I can't really provide anything definitve.

as far as i know an NPC without a primary, and only a pistol will always pickup a primary, no matter what weapon

The whole ammo thing. In ShoC and CS you cannot sell ammo to NPC's..only CoP remedies that...in ShoC the NPC will only use the whatever ammo is in that gun and then switch to a gun it has

An NPC won't take a weapon from you or pick up one on their own
unless they are predisposed to have the ammo for it. You can test
this with an AK, a Viper and a shotgun. Plus it helps for the weapon
to have ammo still in it. Higher end weapons are also more desirable.
You can test this in the 100 Rads Bar. Give Snitch an AK and then
offer him upgrades like a TRs-301, an IL-86, an SGI 5k and a GP 37.

You also have to drop it against them, just right. Sometimes facing
them or turning to your side next to them as it may take a few tries.
People who are "green" friendly are easier than those that are neutral.

I've always thought that the primary stat that NPC's look at is damage. Usually if a weapon has higher damage stat than it's current one it will take it and equip it, though if it doesn't carry the ammo type for it it will will blow through the mag and then switch back to it's original weapon. It also seems to help if the weapon is in good condition and loaded.

I've gotten NPC's with sawed-offs to take SPAS's, but plot-related NPC's, like Petruha or Guide, seem to very attached to their main weapon, and will not swap for anything unless that weapon is lost.

I got Hunter in the 100 Rads Bar to give up the "family rifle", his
sawn-off shotgun for a TRs-301. He dropped it like a hot potato.

well poked around on the web..and from the information i have gathered so far

NPC weapon use conditions:

- Weapon must be ranked better than his current
- Weapon most contain some ammo
- NPC must have ammo for said weapon *

* If the NPC does not have ammo for said weapon in his inventory, once the clip has been emptied, the NPC will switch to another weapon.

The ranks work funny too.. Sometimes NPC's think the BM16 Sawed Off Shotgun is better than even an LR300 or SVD and so on and so forth. NPC's also never switch to pistols unless they only spawn with only a pistol or run out of ammo for their primary weapon (if they picked it up) and can't find another primary weapon laying about.

There is another weird thing where most pistols are labeled as a "PM".. So if a Stalker is using a PM Pistol, he will never pick up another Pistol unless it's labeled as a different kind of pistol. Unfortunately that pretty much makes the majority of worthwhile pistols useless to give to them.

All the info I could find...so I was kind of correct NPCs do have weapon ranks...what im trying to find out...what are the weapon ranks ?

Also when I was trying to save the Dutier in Dark Valley and he doesn't have a gun kept trying to drop him different pistols no wonder he didn't want to pick em up..most count as ''PM'' eh

Also I think I got an idea that just might work...get a SIP pistol and give it to the bridge army guy see how he likes it over his upgraded fort...

Well I always try to arm Rookie loners with some good shooters, so I can give them a fighting chance. And yes they prefer sawn-off over anything of lower damage, because sawn-off has high damage if used properly.

If you drop them a weapon, loaded ofcourse, they will use it until they empty the loaded magazine, after that they switch back to original weapon.

They at least need to have 1 bullet in inventory for reserve, so they can reload.

In Cop it's easy to see NPC's with different weapons because of looting feature in CoP, as they can loot ammo for weapon they took from body.

In ZRP I enable option to trade ammo with npc's so I can give them good weapons and make sure they can use it long time because I will sell them ammo.

Nice view over Village in Cordon while Rookies carrying TRS , Abakans, FN's

In CS you might loan the tank machine gun to an NPC, its 2000 rounds should last a while.
