Not really Folklore... but i thought it was a cool idea

So the other day me and my mate got attacked by a large Merc Squad, you know, wrong place, wrong time sort of thing; a few twists and turns and we’d lost them. No point 2 Stalkers taking on almost 20 Mercs. But of course, soon enough they found us again. in their haste to take us down, half their squad walked straight into a electro anomaly, fried them. So we took out the rest, while we were searching the bodies that didn’t have a few thousand volts running through them. I found the leaders PDA, once I’d hacked into it, I found out who sent them… the CIA.

I got hold of my contact in the Big Land, and found out a few things apparently: 6 months ago a US Navy submarine disappeared, they sent out search vessels and kept the whole thing hush hush, so they find the Sub sunk, and no survivors. They manage to retrieve several pieces of the wreckage, it was mangled, they were sure it’d been torpedoed until they realised the damaged wasn’t right. Some recovered Electronics appeared to be fried metal twisted and bent out of shape, and Toxic resisdue left slowly eating into the metal. No one had any idea. But someone thinks it has something to do with the Zone.

I thought my contact was taking the piss, the Zone is land locked no sub is going to make it up the river, haha feed your old school friend now Stalker some random story to cover up the fact he has no idea what I’m on about. cheers!

Only thing is the location of the Sub: A roughly 1500 miles East off the coast of New Zealand, -52.375599, -148.535156. I checked it out, it’s almost the exact Antipode of the Chernobyl NPP, the opposite side of the World, literally. The world liked to think artefact smuggling was their problem and the Zone was Ukraine’s problem. But if this is true, the Zone is now everyones problem!

Any notions of containment were illusions to begin with.

Everyone knows the 'soul', rare artefact can fix you up better than any doctor given enough time to rest, minor wounds disappear as quickly as they appear.
There are rumours however of a powerful artefact, even greater than the soul. They say that it is the very reason why some of the monolith are so damn difficult to drop. Those exos can be of great assistance but not even that could save you from a 12 gauge to the torso at point blank range or a AP sniper round to the head.
The 'eye of god' some have come to call it.
Could be utter hogwash but it sure as hell would explain why the bastards just won't stay down.

At times I get bored and sometimes, when I am bored, I start to scribble. Make of these scribbles what you will.

Some say that the centre holds a cornucopia of artefacts and that lying deep within is the mystical wish granting monolith, some say that is all myths, lies, ramblings of madmen and it is most likely just like any other part of this godforsaken hellhole.
There is some truth to some of the stories. Indeed many have tried to reach there ... few however ever did and even fewer came back. Those poor souls, those few, who managed to find their way back, were never the same. They may have answered their names but the person was different or missing entirely leaving them staring at you with a empty gaze.
All they ever talked about was the centre and what a magnificent place it was ... constantly trying to entice others to go there, like there weren't enough young fools already.
Dead men walking … ‘counterparts’ some of older stalkers called them ... none of them stayed alive long after returning, people would often find them in a ditch somewhere, face-down in a puddle of their own fluids, hands reaching toward the north.
Whatever truly lies there is no good to anyone.

Dream Guardian

I was once struck down with brain infection while working in the Zone borders... You know... the nasty stuff... I went into a comma 3 days after the quack doctors at Cordon failed to treat me... When I was out cold, I had a strange dream: I felt like I was in a void of emptiness, of complete solace and peace... There was nothing in this vast empty space but a strange, jet black, jelly like creature that hangs on top of the "ceiling".

When ever I would attempt to get close to it, my dream would be twisted into insane heights, madness beyond your imagination, beyond comprehension, I had to keep distance with the creature, but it was the only thing that was keeping me company in my dream...

After boring myself out in my own little world, throwing rocks at that creature-thing to see how it flops, a strange humanoid figure with no head suddenly appears. It's appearance was the same of that of the creature on the ceiling, except it had glowing crimson red veins pulsating through it's entire body...

It extended it arms to reach the creature, connect itself to the mass of jello like substance, and it spoke to me:

"Thank you for had taken care of my possession while I had been away... I will now grant you a gift of gratitude... Dreamer.. What do you sole desires..?"

It spoke in a language I do not know but just happens to understand. I hesitated to answer his question, but after thinking about my current condition, my family, my friends, I said to him:

"I want... To continue living..."

As soon as I made the wish, the creature hanging high suddenly shatters into thousand upon thousand of glass shards. The shards rained down from the heavens, piecing through me as if sharp blades... It was extraordinary painful, and that is when I woke up, screaming as if I was having a terrible nightmare...

I apparently had woken up from a dream that lasted for 3 months, the dudes at Cordon had already made a nice burial for me, thinking that I had died a very long time ago... They almost though I was a zombie rising from my grave like that... Yeah...

How I managed to survive brain infection, being buried in the ground for 3 months without food or water, or otherwise, is not clear. The only thing clear is that there are reports of similar incidents like me before, stalkers sometimes goes into a comma for several years before waking with similar dreams... They all reported of a jello like entity in their dreams, and the headless figure. No one knows what is behind all this: A Zone virus? Controllers? Simply pure fabrication? They do not know...

This an adaptation of the Dream Fiend in my personal manga into stalker (had nothing to do with stalkers by the way). Dream Fiends are basically spiritual entities that locks people into the Dream, the only difference is that Dream Fiends locks you up in the dream eternally, while the Dream Guardian adaptation only locks you in a defined amount of time... Dream Fiends are also much more sadistic and nastier, usually corrupting the sleeper's souls and force it to serve the Dream Fiend's master... Dream Fiends and Dream Guardians can also infiltrates other people's dreams....

I guest a good theme to the Dream Guardian would be this:

I always though Mercs are American PMCs? I even read somewhere that GSC even considered them to be as so in the beta files...

I know this is old, but

Local outfits doing the dirty work for foreign clients and buying foreign equipment. An actual foreign incursion group was created for and then cut from Clear Sky during development.

The STALKER Wiki claims that the mercenaries were originally meant to be the US military, offering no citations as usual. Evidently the wiki-fiddlers also haven't gotten the news that Wolfhound and his crew were actually members of Freedom in alpha builds of the game.

Pripyat is already a nasty place in on itself, what with all the monolith and its extensive mutant populous but at least you can evade those if you are lucky.
The worst danger however is an unique anomaly, travelling from building to building ... the infinite hallway.
You may think ’surely it’s not much worse than the bubbles’ but there you are wrong, bubbles merely displace you and then you can be on your merry way once you learn how to avoid them ... that however does not hold true for the hallway, once you step in, you can never get out
Every once in a while you can hear stray transmissions that leak out, people begging for help, slowly going insane, dying of starvation or dehydration

Ever been to the Z&L? Ever notice the jukebox there?
No-one exactly remembers any more or knows, from where or when the peculiar contraption appeared in the bar. No-one really cares to know either, for its seemingly endless selection of music has brought much needed entertainment and variety to the otherwise rather dreary local.
It needs no coin to operate and apparently can be turned on by a mere stray thought, sometimes it even sparks to life on its own.
Truly a wonder of the ZONE I tell you.
