Very astute.

It's me - Wish was taken, so I'm Hauuu. I listen to all feedback good or bad, and try to answer all questions to do with Zone, Freedom, Atrophy, my other work, whatever. Thanks for reading.

So yeah, everyone, please share your feelings. In a manly stalker way, not like therapy. (Therapists are not to be trusted.)

Welcome Wish (Hauuu)

Great to see you take time to show up here.

The only bad feedback I have is that there is only 1 update a week though I know you are busy doing other stuff.

You are a master of cliffhangers, and great at creating a story that draws the reader into it. Can't wait for the next part.

Yeah, I'm busy. Busy playing SSF4AE and CSS. But I digress.

Uh, yeah - regarding the release schedule, Atrophy chapters were long, so that was a 7 day cycle, Freedom chapters are shorter, so they're actually on a 5(ish) day cycle, which is a little better than one a week, but not much. I suppose I could go for faster, but I couldn't promise that it would be consistent. I'm not busy right now, but if I became busy, the release schedule would take a hit. With Atrophy I was way, way ahead - I'd be posting chapter 30 while I was writing chapter 50. Freedom isn't like that, I'm only one or two chapters ahead at most. I just don't like to make promises that I can't keep - but I can try aiming for a four day cycle. No promises. I can probably put up a new one tomorrow.

As for cliffhangers, I have to end chapters somewhere at something resembling a consistent length. I'm usually not really trying to do cliffhangers, it just works out that way. Sometimes it probably feels like a cheap shot, and for that I apologize. The totally lame one at the end of part 3 was just me being insecure - I wanted everyone to stay interested so they would be sure to want to read part 4. Whether or not that little ploy will work... remains to be seen. But I'm glad you like the stories. I definitely have fun with them. I don't feel like Freedom's really gotten going yet, but hang with it, I've got vision.

A guy in the thread said something about having trouble following events toward the end of the Zone. It's important that you ask me about that, not only because I should be able to enlighten you, but because it's critical for me to know where my storytelling is hard to follow. If I make mistakes, don't worry about my feelings, point them out so I can avoid them in the future. (I don't mean typos, but you can point those out too.)

So please - if there's anything, any little thing, that you're not clear on, ask - because then we both get to learn.

I can answer that. Major spoilers below regarding Chapters 1-100 of the Zone. Taken straight from the official Zone study guide.

Key points of Part 8: Stalker

Character Deaths

-Stranger/Elizabeth Belle/the Narrator succumbs to her wounds after she reaches the Room.
-Lupus is killed by an unseen sniper in a seemingly random act of banditry.
-Riet is killed by Westmoreland, again, seemingly at random.
-Jake dies in the act of killing Theodus.
-Theodus is killed by Jake.
-Exile is shot and killed by Ever.
-Venge is, much earlier, killed by friendly fire from Shredlight.

Notable Survivors of the initial 100 chapters:

Shredlight
Ever
The Biker
Westmoreland
Velvet

All of whom have prominent roles in Atrophy, along with a few other Zone alumni, and thus by default must survive the events of Freedom as well. Don't take that to mean that Freedom has no surprises in store.

A brief FAQ regarding the events at the end of the Zone, which I often get emails asking me about.

The 'Meat Grinder' scenes? What are those?

These are the scenes where pivotal moments are shown away from the main characters - ie - Venge's decision to enter the Zone, Lupus' death, etc. These visions and other hallucinations were shown to the Biker, Elizabeth, and Ever as they walked through the Meat Grinder on their way to the center. If you're unfamiliar with the Grinder, see the Stalker film.

Why didn't Ever or the Biker enter the Room? Or did they?

This scene parallels the themes from the Stalker film. Ever didn't enter the Room because he didn't trust himself; he might say that his wish was for world peace, but maybe his true wish is for all life to cease to exist. The room would know his true wish, and by going inside, he might inadvertently end all life. He wasn't willing to risk giving his id that kind of power, because he knows about his own personal darkness.

The Biker didn't go inside because he had nothing to wish for and he knew it.

As for the or did they part, wait and see.

How did they get out of the Center?

They walked out like they owned the place - the barrier doesn't keep people in, it keeps people out.

Was anything that happened in the Center real?

I'll answer that if you can answer this: What is real? But Chernobyl NPP didn't really fall down; I can tell you that much.

Why is part 8 called Stalker? How did Elizabeth become one? Aren't you a stalker just for going to the Zone?

No. A stalker is identified by his or her pure love for the unknown. Elizabeth went to the Zone to find her father, but that didn't make her a stalker - it just made her a very devoted daughter. Only when her father was out of the picture, and she made the decision that nothing was more important than seeing the center - not even her life - did her transformation into a real stalker become complete. It's a metaphor.

That should clear some things up; pardon any typos - it's very late and I'm tired. I wrote a couple chapters of Freedom today, so let's say there'll be a new one up on Monday or Tuesdayish.

Next question!

Welcome to our happy little forum, Wish...

I'm currently re-reading The Zone and will be re-reading Atrophy shortly.

I'd kind of actually want a hardback version of them both, though I realize with copyright laws and all that nonsense, that's probably not going to happen with The Zone... Atrophy, maybe, though?

Hello, This all sounds quite interesting and being a story newbie it looks like I have a lot to read, And I am looking forward to it, I hope you dont mind if I pop in with a question now and then. I'm sure I will have some and I will throw some opinions at you too. Thanks.

Actually could someone give me a short list of where to start and the best order to go through the stories.

@ Doomsday: Yeah, official stalker stuff is unlikely. Official Atrophy is, on the other hand, likelier than you think. The Zone would all have to be re-written anyway.

@ David: If you want to read my stories, The Zone comes first, it's at http://pseudozone.blogspot.com/ - and if you wanted to read things in order, you'd start with the first 100 chapters of that, parts 1 - 8, which form what most of us call the Stranger Arc. You'll have to go way down into the archives to get at the early chapters. Note that they were pretty rough and unpolished; Freedom and Atrophy are better.

Then you can read whatever. Chronologically, it's The Zone, Freedom, Atrophy - but Freedom and Atrophy are both still ongoing. Most folks, thanks to order that I wrote them in, went from the Zone to Atrophy to Freedom. How you want to do it is up to you.

If you manage to get through it all - well, that's impressive. There are also some short stories - they're prequels to the Zone, but I'd suggest waiting until you're like halfway through Atrophy or something before reading them.

And of course questions and feedback aren't just welcome, they're encouraged.

You know, the resemblance of Silver Bay in Atrophy to the city I live in right now is almost uncanny.
