---QUOTATION---
I am getting some editing done on earlier chapters as well as getting some translations done by my buddy Crashtest. (American English to British English because I suck that bad at it ) Also, he is working on getting some art done and is currently focusing on the cover for Life and Death. Since I modeled Virtue after myself you may see me showing up in full Stalker gear soon.

Chapter 11: Suicide Mission

Hello, hello! I've been hard at work lately transferring all of my Stalker work (and everything else I've done) to my new blog. I set it up as a central place for all of the creative outlets I use to come together. The direct link to the site can be found in my signature. Feel free to leave your comments (no log in required) on anything you want and if you like it, share it with your friends!

After the cliffhanger, Gremlin and co. finally meet with Sakharov in Yantar to discuss their plan of action to gather the remaining pieces of the puzzle in hopes of solving the sudden aggression in mutants throughout the Zone and the goal behind the Military's experiments. Nimbus' fate also hangs in the balance after he dove into a swarm of mutated cats to save Alek - a Merc who became trapped in Dead City.

Virtue hugged his raincoat tightly around his body, thinking it would somehow conceal him more as he leaned out from around the irradiated car; one of countless more in the vehicle scrapyard he had decided to explore while patrolling the neutral outpost in the Garbage. The Bandits outnumbered him and blocked the easiest way out. If he moved he would be seen. There were two choices: try to stay hidden, or kill them all.

One of the Bandits looked strikingly familiar. As he turned Virtue could make out a shotgun in his hands and three large scars on his face. As he focused on him, the other Bandits disappeared deeper into the scrapyard but he continued to look in his direction.

Does he see me?

Virtue wondered as he ducked back behind the car. As he peered cautiously back around the car the Bandit was suddenly right in front of him. Virtue nearly jumped out of his skin as he fell onto his back, pulling a pistol from one of the front pockets on his raincoat.

“Loner!” he yelled and raised the barrel of his shotgun to level with Virtue’s head.

Virtue yelped and fired a shot at him, hitting him right between the eyes. The Bandit’s eyes rolled back in his head and he fell to his knees, collapsing onto his side. His dead eyes stared back at Virtue in anger. Despite his efforts, Virtue could not bring himself to look away. He knew this man. His eyes continued to stare back at him accusingly. He reached his hand out cautiously to close them, trembling as his fingers neared the sockets.

“It’s all your fault.” the corpse said, miraculously. Virtue jumped away as it stood to its feet, blood forking down his face. He closed his eyes as the shotgun leveled with him.

BOOM!

This fits yet again.

Keep in mind that while I may not seem to have much to say, it's more like there's nothing I need to say that I haven't already said to you, Psynexus.

Keep it up, man.

Aren't they so huggably-wuggably- OH GOD GET IT OFF!!!

Next suicidal adventure is on its way... with many more grotesque mutants you won't expect, more anomalies, radiation, and other surprises. *TV announcer voice* YOU WON'T WANNA MISS IT! *random explosion*

TO ALL: I have posted the character section for all the characters on my blog. You can access it from the Stalker page in my signature (bottom of the page under Misc.) or the direct link here: http://psynexus.blogspot.com/2010/11/zone-characters.html. I will continually update this post as the characters evolve (and new ones are added).

I plan to do mutants next, which will include all the mutants seen in-game, the cut mutants, mutants that didn't make the cut, and a couple I came up with. If it was even mentioned in my story, you'll find it there. As always, let me know what you think in a comment either here or on the new blog.

I hope you approve of the cast I selected for the characters.

Did you hire Micheal Bay to direct the new adventure?

Edit:

Just read the character bios thingy, I lol'd after each character, specially Zombie. I mean I know Zombie is a stoic but Silvester Stallone? Also I didn't picture Solitaire being Peter Stormare (didn't that guy play Satan in Constantine?

Reaper being played by Sean Bean, classic (I remember Sean Bean played a loudmouth merc in Ronin so good choice)

Phantom being played by Timothy Olyphant, I dunno, the only movie I have seen the guy in was Hitman and he had less emotion than a bar of soap so...

I am kind of satisfied by Nimbus, not much to complain really I imagined him similar (at least physically) and Adrien Brody I saw handle the badass roles in Predators so I am fine with him playing Nikita and Jester is... perfect

As for Gremlin, Enigma and Jargon, they are pretty much perfectly how I imagined them, I would pay to see Jason Statham play Gremlin (I wonder how well he can pull the eastern european accent)

All in all, make this a movie and hire this crew, we can fund this with Youtubes Theoretical Dollars

Woot! I'm glad someone had something to say about my choices. Discussion will now ensue.

The choice of Sylvester Stallone for Zombie was definitely for the build and the look. I'll update the character if I can think of an actor that looks like him but with a more stoic personality. On the other hand, Zombie is basically Rambo minus all the cheesy lines so it just made sense in my head.

Peter Stormare as Solitaire was a tribute to the guy's awesome Russian accent in movies like Armageddon. I've always liked the look and of the guy and how he can go from from happy, eccentric and likable to ice-cold, insane and feared.

Reaper is the character I struggled with most. Sean Bean has always been one of my favorite British actors of all time since GoldenEye 007 and Equilibrium. I couldn't picture him in the role at first since I generally saw him as a more serious character, but after he played the bad guy for the second half of GoldenEye I just put an intoxicated, loud, vulgar twist on it and it fit perfectly.

Phantom: I had a few choices for him since I modeled him after one of my RL friends, but I ultimately went with Timothy Olyphant for his role in Die Hard. Hitman is a terrible movie for emotional value, you wanna see the guy shine watch him play the cocky hacker in Live Free or Die Hard.

Nimbus: If you've never seen or heard of the TV show "Prison Break" watch a trailer or something and you'll see why he hits perfectly.

Adrian Brody had the look right off the bat and after seeing him in Predators I totally saw it, just like you.

Jester: Jeffrey Dean Morgan's role in "The Watchmen" was spot-on for what I would see in Jester.

Gremlin: I couldn't not have a bad ass like Jason Statham for him. He'd be the perfect leader for the team alongside all the other awesome characters.

Enigma: Amy Lee = incredibly sexy, dark, and tough enough not to snap like a twig in a radioactive wasteland.

Jargon: What person would be more worthy than Aleksandr Kaidanovsky - the star of the movie "Stalker"? Nobody, that's who.

No thoughts on Virtue eh? Since he is modeled after me I decided on Cillian Murphy for look and personality. Plus he does kind have this other-worldly look to him that could easily suggest he is the patented vat-grown specimen C-Consciousness made him to be.

Edit (Epiphany): Speaking of the movie "Ronin", Jean Reno could make an excellent alternative for Zombie...

“Ah, here he is. Let’s get settled in.” Voronin said to all gathered. They found their seats as Lukash entered and took his place opposite from Voronin next to Cap and Skinflint.

“Good morning.” He said to them both as he took his seat.

“I can’t believe we’re actually doing this.” Cap said, looking not at all pleased.

He leaned in and whispered back “I know, Cap. But we don’t have a whole lot of options right now. This is for the good of Freedom.”

Cap sighed. Lukash could only hope he too would believe that statement in time. The results of this mission would tell.

“Barin – do you copy?” Voronin spoke into his radio. A voice came on after a few moments.

“Barin here, I copy.”

“Is your squad ready to move out?”

“Ready, sir.” Barin replied.

Voronin smiled, looking across the table at Lukash as he cued his own radio.

“Come in Max.”

“Max here.”

“Prepare to move out on my command.”

“Yes, Boss.”

Voronin nodded, leaving his chair to stand next to a map of the Zone.

“Our sources have confirmed the location of two underground labs: Agroprom Underground, located beneath the Agroprom Research Institute and Lab X-18, located in the Dark Valley. X18 appeared on the manifest for Lab X-16, which our friends in Freedom graciously recovered for our use whereas the entrance to Agroprom Underground has been known to us for some time.”

He pointed out the location of both facilities on the map for all to see.

“We will enter Agroprom Underground through the Garbage while Freedom proceeds through the Dark Valley into X18. They should know the area well, considering it was their old stomping grounds.”

Lukash wasn’t sure what to make of that comment. Back in the Faction Wars, they controlled much of that area before they had moved north towards their ultimate goal: The Military Warehouses. They had sacrificed everything to secure the base and make it their home in the Zone, but the price had come at a large cost. Once they had taken the base from the Military, Duty swept in to help their allies, flanking Freedom as they sent in reinforcements and all but eradicating them. Lukash was sure the General meant no disrespect, but that didn’t stop the two Freedomers beside him from muttering under their breaths.

“Once our teams have gathered all the intel they can, we will coordinate with Sakharov in Yantar and see what he can make of it all. Any questions?”

The room was silent – that was until a voice spoke up from the door which had opened sometime during the briefing.

“Yeah, I got one. How long is it gonna take before Freedom stabs us in the back?”

Lukash looked over his shoulder to see the Stalker with the skull on his suit standing there.

“Skull, you’re out of line.” Voronin warned him.

“What’s wrong with you all? Did you forget what happened back in the Faction wars? They’re all a bunch of Anarchist scum. They go against everything we are.”

“Skull-“

“They took me as their prisoner and beat me. They’re a bunch of spineless cowards! If, by some miracle, they do complete their half of the mission they won’t share anything with us. They all deserved to be drug out of here by their feet and killed one by-“

“SKULL! THAT IS ENOUGH!” Voronin slammed his fist down on the table, enraged. “Get him out of here!”

The door guards reacted immediately, grabbing his arms and escorting him from the room.

“Get off of me!” he threw their arms off of him with incredible strength, thanks to the exosuit marking him as an esteemed member of Duty. The door guards stood down, looking to Voronin for guidance. “I know the way.”

He looked at Voronin who glared back at him. His gaze shifted down to Lukash and the two Freedomers beside him. The cold, tinted eyes of his suit’s faceplate met theirs apathetically – but they could sense his disgust as he shook his head and marched out of the room. The sound of his boots stomping on the concrete echoed down the hall until the door closed once again. Voronin took a few more seconds to compose himself as he leaned over the table.

“I’m sorry… Skull has a lot of bad blood with Freedom. He’s young and stubborn; please pay no mind to his words.”

“That’s OK.” Lukash said, lying through his teeth. Such was the world of politics.

“Well… all that’s left to do now is to give the final order.” The General held his radio at the ready, inviting Lukash to have the honors.

Lukash held his radio to his mouth. Voronin looked on, expectantly.

So this was it. For the first time in their long and violent history, Freedom and Duty would finally join forces and work together. He wasn’t sure how long this alliance would last as the two factions were simply too different as they stood to coexist. But looking across the table at the opposing faction’s leader he saw himself: just another man, uniting Stalkers under a single flag to further their goals in the Zone. If their mission failed, there might not be a Zone left to fight over. This was for the good of them all.

“Max?”

“Here.”

“Move out.”

“Understood.”

Voronin cued his radio next.

“Barin – copy?”

“Copy.”

“Proceed.”

“Yes sir.”

The General stood, looking over the faces of his colleagues for assurance that they were doing the right thing. The looks of concern on them all were all too evident. On the opposite end of the table were the Freedomers, all wearing their poker faces. But he knew they were thinking the same thing the turned faces of those sitting in front of them.

This had to work.

“Dismissed.”

The Dutyers and Freedomers stood and filed out of the door in a line.

He wasn’t sure where the two factions were headed or what the outcome of this mission would be but he knew one thing; as long as the Zone existed Duty would be there… or die fighting for it.
