Console Games ( News, Reviews & Deals )

I've tried to get others to start a thread on this. I felt compelled to go
ahead and do this ( not that I'm a major fan of this medium ) since it
seems people post about this subject but they are lost among all the
various threads they appear on. Hopefully they will converge here.

My last console was a PS2 but the games I enjoyed were few and far between, I can't get on with a controller due to partial paralysis in my right arm, I'm okay for racing games like Gran Turismo but using my right hand for first person shooters is a mess as the having no sense of touch means I struggle when it comes to keeping my fingers on the right button and trying to move from button to button is messy as I have to look at my hand to get the right button making me too slow hence the lack of interest in multiplayer titles.

I still have my PS1 & PS2 plus all the games boxed up in the attic, I can't see me ever using them again but maybe my grandkids grandkids will find them one day and make a small fortune on what will then hopefully be Retro toys that are worth a few quid.
They may even enjoy using them themselves, I remember finding an old reel to reel player with loads of reels in the attic as a kid, It was a standalone model that projected the picture onto the bedroom wall there was no audio but there was one reel with a Thunderbirds movie on it. Sadly it was accidentally left behind when we moved house in the 80's, Anyway I've gone a bit off track sorry.

I think Microsoft messed up a bit when they started selling Xbox games in the Windows store for the PC as for me that means if I was to buy a console it wouldn't be an Xbox. That said they may change their tune now the new Xbox Scorpio's out, That's if it sells well, I was hoping to get some Halo FPS titles on PC as I've never played it.

I hate Intel's lying scummy POS higher ups. Not their engineers. And I dont hate Nvidia near as much as that, even if their G-Sync and anti-open source stances are dangerous to PC Gaming long term. Mostly I am salty on their stifling of game design when they bought PhysX.

Conslows are an anti-art, anti-consumer market model that makes no sense in the current days.

They cost more long term. They do less. They harm modding. They harm backwards compatibility. Nintendo and Sony bully developers at time. All consoles are good for, is to test small arms ballistics. Their time of good for gaming ability... ended in 2000.

"
My Argument: Game consoles are worthless thus not worth buying, unless you absolutely can't refrain from their exclusives and cannot emulate them. But I will also debate the value of some of these exclusives, particularly the ones whose main focus is on emulating cinema above all else, to the point where I will suggest people defending these need more experience with other kinds of games and perhaps need to watch more movies and TV and after doing so, will no longer strongly argue in their favor.

And stating an obvious but always overlooked fact, consoles (proprietary systems that can't be upgraded and have little to no backwards compatibility) are of course objectively bad for the industry

Most anti-PC gaming/pro-console arguments I see are based on falsehoods, so I suggest reading this (lots of facts and more specific arguments in there) to avoid doing so.

And some things to note, I was a console gamer from 1999-2007, though I still played a few console exclusives after 2007 like the first three Uncharted games, Gran Turismo 5, and Forza 4 (these are the only ones I played extensively after 2007).

Not an argument, but an objective fact often ignored and I want to see commented on: Consoles are objectively damaging and limiting to the gaming industry, due to them causing there to be multiple proprietary systems, none of which can be upgraded, and due to their lack of backwards compatibility, lack of modding and game content creation, tyrannical multiplayer model in which players have no control over dedicated servers so MP games can and will get shut down forcing you to abandon the game's multiplayer, and general lack of functionality (e.g. device compatibility). What do you pro-console gamers have to say about this?

So, let the debate begin.

Proposed value of consoles so far by members in this thread:

Nothing new since these are really the only things you can point to.

Out of the box apples to apples performance in favor of the XBOX One X, without any regards to long term viability and how quickly this will change, and without consideration of the fact that PC isn't limited to apples to apples performance due to the option to select different resolutions and graphics settings.

Plug-and-play nature of the consoles. There are pre-built PCs, but as the article linked above states, they are indeed overpriced."

This is the article:
https://www.gnd-tech.com/content/876-Console-Gaming-to-PC-Gaming-FAQ

I am yet to see a console gamer manage to defend consoles on any moral or long term manner. The most they can say is that... they used to be good for gaming. Or that they cost less if you buy it second hand, a few years after release and play all your games second hand and resell them (which is as efficient for the industry as piracy...). And id argue even then it costs more long term.

You've vaguely given some info on your accident, making you more of
an indoor person but I wasn't aware of the exact details as to what or
how it happened. That certainly sucks on having difficulty with a mouse
and getting a good feel for control. Twisting one's wrist to the left and
placing a hand flat on an object is not a natural position and requires
more strain than how a hand rests naturally. With that in mind, rather
than using a horizontal mouse like most of us do, have you considered
trying a vertical mouse? The hand rests more naturally on it, and the
tactile control of clasping and using your fingers is a lot easier and more
comfortable. They aren't very expensive and you may find it the solution
to your difficulty with a regular mouse. Here's a link to show the design:

with regards to one-handed gaming (and I don't mean to pry, nor tell anyone that controllers are an alternative, but - I have encountered the subject before), people have been coming up with various solutions for years; mainly on their own, I assume, but these days there are also other sources available:

http://www.oneswitch.org.uk/art.php?id=89

it is a site dedicated to one-handed controllers; of course these needn't apply for the PC-crowd, but since this is a console-topic...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

on a different note; if anyone is still playing Red Dead Redemption on the Playstation 3 (since it's not backwards-compatible on the PS4, AFAIK) - and (still) have issues logging onto the multiplayer servers, then there is a 'solution':

start single-player
start Private Multiplayer Server
from there join a Public Multiplayer Server

now this 'fix' may eventually crash, if someone with the hack/exploit enters the server; but I've had a good few runs on-line the past few nights, without too much hiccups

it is a crying shame that Rockstar has not bothered fixing the PS3 servers, since the exploit was added about a year after RDR's release for the PS3, but at least it's still got a kick-ass singleplayer campaign and LAN-capabilities
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and speaking of Playstation 3, if you want to get some more fps and longer draw-distance/less pop-ins in games such as RDR, GTA IV, etc. - try this little trick:

https://youtu.be/2AN28MNDj6E

basically it's a video showing how to turn off certain, not too obvious features, in order to gain framerate, at a very slight quality-loss (especially for me, who have my PS3 hooked up to an old CRT anyways )

and yes; above video actually worked
and no; I am not surprised, but rather dumbfounded by my own negligence, not having turned those features off years ago

:edit
I realize these were nor reviews, nor deals - but figured it'd be best to keep the console-talk in one thread, no?

PICO-8

if you want something very different and not necessarily fitting for this thread, since it only runs on PC's (Linux, Mac, Windows), but at the same time, it refers to itself as a Fantasy Console, PICO-8 is exactly that

when booting up PICO-8, the user is presented with a black screen and a text-prompt, much like DOS, or BASIC, by pressing escape the user will enter the GUI of PICO-8 and this is where the magic happens

in the GUI, you have several 'tabs', the first one you are presented with, being where you need to input your code (i.e. program), then there's the tab for your sprite-editor, then there's the tab for your map-editor and one for your sound/music-editor

PICO-8 uses a 'simpler form of LUA' (from what I've gathered) and there have been and still are games being produced/released at a constant rate

the games themselves will be made within the restraints of the 'fantasy-console' that is PICO-8 and it provides you with the following specs:

32kb RAM
16 Colors
128x128 pixels per frame

add to that four directional-keys and two 'action'-buttons for up to two players (i.e., technically the programmer has 8 directional-keys and 4 'action'-buttons to work with, thus allowing for a certain extent of flexibility in terms of user-interaction in the games)

to load a game from within PICO-8, the easiest way is simply to type splore at the prompt, which gives you an on-line database of games available and all you need to do is scroll to the one you wish to play and then run it; simple as that

if you have any controllers for your PC, then you may utilize these, if you encounter any issues, whilst using third-party controllers, or similar; I strongly recommend XPadder, which allows you to rebind any key on your keyboard to any button on your controller; I personally have a SNES-controller hooked up to my retro-PC, running PICO-8 games on my CRT-TV from the couch - very convenient

also, if you wish to play the games, but don't want PICO-8 itself, then they're all freely available at:

https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?cat=7&sub=2&mode=carts

there are some amazing games (and demos) being made out there, given the constraints of the 'console'

there is a renewed interest in older consoles/computers, much due to their limitations, as these constraints really force the programmers/artists/designers to think outside the box (of endless RAM, CPU-power and graphical fidelity), thus giving us contemporary iterations of games which might as well have been released in another decade, but with a modern design perspective, thus giving those of us who actually do enjoy pixelated graphics, bleepy sound-effects and score-boards something to look forward to, whilst at the same time promoting new programmers, artists and designers to really push their creativity to the limit, in trying to create something even remotely interesting in a world with triple-a games and retro-'esque' games being pumped out daily

:edit
(do note above rant does not necessarily apply to current gen consoles, since they are basically PC's in terms of hardware; rather I am mainly referring to the 8-16 -bit era)

for further information I'd suggest reading this:

https://thenewstack.io/retro-game-pico-8-basics/

to learn how to program for PICO-8, I recommend the fanzines:

https://sectordub.itch.io/pico-8-fanzine-1

as a splendid example of a game in PICO-8 I personally enjoy:

https://youtu.be/LrrZvixSUgA

and for PICO-8 itself:

Splitfish Mouse and 'Fragchuck'

for those of you who have a difficult time adjusting to controllers, especially in FPS's and Third Person Shooters/etc. where you are used to controlling the camera with a mouse, per example, then there's Splitfish's accessories; I personally use their PS3 and Xbox 360 mouse and fragchuck with little to no issues (the main problem I have with is with the shape of the Xbox 360 mouse, due to button-placement, but one can get used to it)

a 'fragchuck', is basically inspired by the Nintendo Wii 'nunchuck' (i.e. a controller fit for one hand, with a thumbstick on top and a couple of buttons available), thus the fragchuck emulates the keyboard, whilst the mouse is... a mouse

https://eu.splitfish.com/

it is also possible to use a variety of keyboards and mice, by default for PS3 and PS4 (may work for Xbox 360, as well) - just ordinary PC-accessories - the main issue being that very few games utilize PC-mouse and/or keyboard, but at least you are able to use the keyboard for text-communication, if nothing else (which is how I mainly used it, since I don't care for voice-chat)

I'm not saying that playing GTA V with an 'inferior mouse and a fragchuck' will make it on par with the PC-version, but there are a bunch of games out there, console-exclusive (Red Dead Redemption and The Warriors, both Rockstar games, both console-exclusive, both worthy entrances in their catalogue, IMO - as recognizable examples), where this solution (or similar) may provide the user with a more familiar experience, thus hopefully heightening their experience of enjoying the game(s) overall
