Read a good book lately?

I posted a similar thread on the old ZSG forums and it seemed to get a decent response.

I just started in on the first volume of 'The Third Chronicles of Thomas Covenant' by Stephen R. Donaldson.

I stand by the statement that Donaldson's 'Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever' are the summit of fantasy literature so far achieved on this planet (sorry, J.R.R. Tolkien).

I read the six volumes (plus) of the first two trilogies in the early 1980s and found them to be mind-blowingly brilliant, and an education to boot (Donaldson is a MA in English - that is MASTER of Arts, and master he is).

The First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever:-
Lord Foul's Bane
The Illearth War (plus 'Gildenfire')
The Power that Preserves

The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever:-
The Wounded Land
The One Tree
White Gold Wielder

The Third Chronicles of Thomas Covenant:-
The Runes of the Earth
Fatal Revenant
Against All Things Ending (due Oct. '10)
No Idea (the series is expected to run to four volumes)

If you fancy a bash at these wonderful novels be ready for some serious wordsmithing - have a good dictionary nearby because Donaldson knows words that most dictionaries don't.

Agreed. I have First Printing First Editions hardbacks of the 1st & 2nd Trilogies. My
copy of Lord Foul's Bane is of the rare original art that was replaced in the 2nd & 3rd.

Last two Books I read that I would recommend: ( Non-Fiction )

Journey To Chernobyl: ENCOUNTERS IN A RADIOACTIVE ZONE by Glenn Alan Cheney

Wormwood Forest: A Natural History of Chernobyl by Mary Mycio

Are the three volumes of the first series housed in a slipcase? Published by Holt, Reinhart & Winston? Illustated by S.C. Wyeth?

What wear is there to the dust wrappers (VERY important)? Any bumped corners on the books themselves (also VERY important)?

Top quality items on offer currently would put the first three volumes, in their slipcase, at about $400.

Wait for the movie (someone will do it eventually). The Lord of the Rings trilogy leapt from £1,500 for the set to £15,000 the set after the movies were made.

From books, now I'm reading a Sergey Nedorub - Clock of Sands (Сергей Недоруб - Песочные Часы). Interesting book.
Before this I started another, but don't know why started new. So now I'm sticking to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. books.

My all time favorite is The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan.

Unfortunately he died in September 2007 before he could finish his work.

It's now continued by Brandon Sanderson, who is an outstanding author himself. Reading his Mistborn trilogy atm.
He did a really good Job on the 12th book of Wheel of Time and I hope he keeps that up for the next two Volumes.

Other series I can recommend is The Dwarves by Markus Heitz

Call of Cthulhu.

Well, nearly all of Lovecraft's works. And No Country For Old Men.

I'm getting into reading lots of non-UK/US writers - Steig Larrson, Jo Nesbo, Carlos Zafon for example. And I'm going back to some old classics like Evelyn Waugh's novels.

Of course the Thomas Covenant novels are a must read and have

Got a copy of Метро 2033 about a month back. Good read, interesting to see how it compared to the game. Hell of a task trying to figure out where Artyom was half the friggin time.
